I agree. I might have to immigrate to Africa before I did that. I'd rather sell bread off my head than sell insurance.

Mark, I hate to break it to you but most of these people aren't trying to get jobs in hotels and restaurants. They are trying to find private sector jobs that pay a living wage and offer health insurance.

Funny how a previously poor Latin American family who was granted residency in AUS, managed to purchase three investment homes in America, using the money they have earned as cleaners there. What does that tell you oh wise one?

The reason those jobs are not affordable here is because the wages are low. The reason wages are so low is because there are so many people willing who need to do the work. Whereas, it's not uncommon for cleaners to be paid up to $30 an hour in AUS. How is this possible? Limitation of supply and demand coupled with so many having college degrees. I used to do the odd landscaping work with my buddy in AUS and would earn $3K for a weekend job. That is not an option for most here period.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

As Gabi keeps stating, if and when there is a need to import unskilled laborers, they should have a legal avenue for permanent residency as this how this country came to be. I find it peculiar that people here who are immigrating spouses seem to think they have an entitlement to immigrate while others don't, especially when many of their immigrant spouses are unskilled.

like ...

yours?

mine?

nessa?

the list goes on and on ...

there are a lot of very skilled immigrant spouses. don't discount them.

My great grandfather had moved his family to England from Ireland, looking for jobs in the mines. He and some other relatives answered an ad for miners in Southern Arizona back at the turn of the century and they came over here as unskilled laborers. It took him 3 years to earn enough money to bring his wife and five children over, who had stayed behind in England. They all ended up living here in America.

You are missing the point. Historically speaking, the US needed workers; however, that was then, this is now. In 2010, this is no longer the case. Heck you guys have already mined half the country, so there is little left to mine. Back in the days, the United States had a huge manufacturing base, thus needed workers. This is now gone. As such, there is little need for unskilled workers. It's not the hard to grasp, you just need to put the ideals and emotion aside.

Limiting supply forces employers to pay more. It's just bizarre to me that for a guy who hates corporations, you seem to encourage what causes Americans to be paid peanuts. Or are those not educated not worthy of a legitimate wage?

 we do have the entitlement, it comes w/ US citizenship & we file an affidavit of support to ensure they do not become a public charge....oh those sticky little details some like to forget.

All citizenship affords you is the ability to file the visa for the petition. The visa isn't a right. It's not an entitlement.

It's just like any other process to get something you want in America. Nobody guarantees you anything.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.

yes & once we excercise our right to apply for a visa the approved visa entitles our spouse to immigrate.

Mike, my great grandfather had no less of an 'entitlement' to make America his new home than your spouse. We are a nation of immigrants and I'm sure you don't have to go back far in your family lineage to also find immigrants who came here with little or no skills, but with the determination to make it in this country.

nope not far at all. both sets of great grandparents. but, the came thru ellis island during an open immigration period. so they were entitled to do so at that time, just as your great grandfather was.

sorry that line is tired & ridiculous. the two time periods & sitsuations are not the same.

I fail to see what it is with our generation, that we cannot allow unskilled laborers a legal pathway to citizenship provided they are needed here, as they were during my ancestor's time. This is not unique to America. We have an aging population where the only real growth is from immigration. We have needed in the past and will need in the future, a flow of immigrants coming here and I don't think it should be limited to only high skilled laborers or through marriage.

steven, i have agreed with you about the need to allow low & unskilled laborers to immigrate to the US.

where we hit the wall is...

i feel it needs to be a controlled immigration. everyone (the whole world) needs to have equal opportunity to do so. they need to respect & abide by the laws of this country.

you seem to want to reward those that have disrespected & skirted the laws of this country by coming here illegally w/ citizenship. you seem to be fine w/ the majority of the immigrants coming from countries within north & south america while the rest of the world is left out.

I keep reading Stephen saying that unskilled laborers should be allowed "if there is a need". So I don't think he's for uncontrolled immigration.

And I haven't read a thing that says he wants to reward those who have come here illegally. What he is saying is for those who aren't highly skilled or don't have a family connection, the US (at present) has no legal path for their immigration.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.
