I don't know what would make me happy. I used to know and now I'm not so sure. GREAT time to have this all come to my attention though.

The question isnt what 'would' make you happy. It seems you 'ARE' happy where you are and your questioning the change. Its you decision but I would suggest that if you are already happy where you are, there is no reason to completely uproot yourself into a new life because you feel you are 'obligated'. This will affect you two as well as your relationship more if you do move than it will offect others if you dont.

Good luck with everything.

Don't know what will make you happy? Only one way to find out. Move. You'll figure out soon enough.

True. I would hate it if we had to move back though. I HATE moving. And it would be even harder if we had kids, don't you think?

I think living in the U.S. would make us happy, maybe just not AS happy as living here with his family close by. I think maybe this all boils down to family.

That sounds profound. :P

Actually, hubby's parents moved from Ontario to Winnipeg and then when they were 30, back to Ontario (with two kids). So obviously it can be done.

We moved around quite a bit when I was a kid, too. Never heard my parents complain about how hard it is. They just did it when it had to be done.

That is interesting. I guess you have to decide if you want to take the risk. I don't think location is as important as being together. If your happy there, why change your address if you dont feel you will be as happy as you already are. Uncertainty is understandable. But you already feel it would be negative.

If you are not happy, and 'dont move back' because you dont like moving, it may cause stess on you two later.

Actually I moved a lot when I was a kid. I think in some ways it was good, others bad. I think I became more independant, yet detached and didnt let people as close since I was used to losing them.

Thanks for the replies, guys, I do feel better. I guess I realize it wouldn't be the end of the world if we were unhappy and we moved back to Canada.

Anyone happen to know how easy or hard it is to buy a house? We've bought a few condos here for student rentals but haven't bought our own house yet. Since we'll be moving we'll obviously have no U.S. job history, but we do have money in savings for a decent size down payment.

Buying is easy. Buying what you like at a fair price takes some work.

Have you considered maybe just renting a place temporarily. That way you have time to consider and adjust. It is much easier to move if you dont have the complication of trying to sell a residence.....just a thought.

We've considered that but the problem is that most people make you sign a one-year lease, do they not?

Most, not all.

And besides, if push comes to shove, you can afford to break a lease. Think of the penalty as the price you pay for the flexibility of not being encumbered with a home of your own. You want something, you pay for it.

Well, some of you may remember - we HATED Canada for a long time. Like, we literally hated living here, the liberal government, the socialist system, blah blah blah.

Which red state are you moving to? The one with the hicks? Or the one with the rednecks? ;)

Some have a buyout clause. Others make you pay off the lease. Many have a setup where you only get a 6mth lease but the payment is a little more. If you buy a house, you may be tied in a lot longer. then selling it you may end up paying some of the fees for the buyer. You would be responsible for payments for however long it took to sell the house.

Overall you may lose less if you came back in a short period of time in an apartment. Maybe not, but something to think about.
