I chalk it up to a lack of general manners that seems to be epidemic these days.

Now there's something i can agree to, without having to dawn my Kelvar suit. B-)

Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.

will it detract from your femininity? Did you do it in high heels?

I think it highlights my femininity, because it showcases the ever-so-slightly ditsy side of me that can't handle big, bad technology like iPhones.innocent.gif

I wasn't wearing heels though.crying.gif

And HEY. NO ONE gets to see me in my hooker skirt except my husband. Oh, and the 2007 Saskatchewan Roughriders, but that is a whole 'nother story.

OK, so, what is the cause of the lack of manners these days? Are they not being taught to children, or not being enforced? I see a lot of problems today that I equate back to this - people no longer treat each other courteously, which ends up meaning that we only care about ourselves and our neighbours (teachers, relatives, etc.) can go hang themselves. If everyone practiced respect for other people like we were taught as children, I think the world would be a much better, safer place. Or am I all lost in warm and fuzzy nostalgia land?

ETA: Oh, and respect for our elders - that is a HUGE bee in my bonnet. I see very few kids now that listen to their elders, often to the point that they won't even listen to their parents. I would have been crucified if I ever talked back to an adult. Debate, fine, talk back, not so much.

I don't call myself a feminist, but others might call me one. I believe in equal opportunities and I don't hold either sex to a higher or lower standard of performance or character aspects.

I don't blame feminism for what is going on in a lot of areas of the world, and I don't think it is just a deterioration among girls. But I do see a deterioration in morals and basic decency among a large portion of youth today. I see a deterioration in ethics. It's frightening to see in your own country.

I also know that a lot of people here on VJ do not have insight into this underbelly of society and think it is minor and not very wide-spread. This is because most people on VJ are not in that class and have no regular contact with people from that class. What this tells me is that what I see on a daily basis has not yet become the norm, thankfully, around the country. But if you want some insight into what I deal with on a daily basis, tune into Maury or Jerry Springer just for a few minutes. Sadly my husband, being stuck at home, has discovered these shows and is drawn to them like a person driving past a deadly car accident.

The people you see on those shows live in a society where their behavior is normal and accepted. They are not just a half a dozen people living surrounded by a world of people otherwise like we like to think of ourselves. These are the people I teach. This is the kind of thing I witness every day at school. Maybe not Maury because that usually involves new mothers testing 4 or 5 men to find the father of their children and my students couldn't afford that even if it were important to them to know for sure, and besides, the boys love claiming how many children they have fathered, but the sorts of triangles and gossip and screaming matches and fist fights and egging such things on you see on Springer is a typical day at my school. (Perhaps a slight exaggeration. It might not be so dramatic everyday, but the underlying behaviors are going on EVERYDAY.)

It is not a result of feminism but it is a result of a form of tolerance that is also a level of prejudice in that we expect less from certain people and we don't "judge" them for it. I'm guilty of this as well because I have to accept my students for who they are and there is very little I can do even if I were allowed and had the time and the know how to change these sorts of outlooks on life. My job is about giving them the skills to live in the world in which they live. But it is very depressing to watch and to deny it exists and is a problem only perpetuates it.

It will take the cooperation of the entire society to change these things and make a better future for these people. And we first have to start by acknowledging the problem.

I actually saw a shoving/punching match between two women in wheelchairs

at a bus stop arguing over who gets on the bus first.

Chalk it up to "Fun City" manners or Women's Lib - don't know which applies exactly...ohmy.gif

If this was in New South Wales, it might be counted as a part of that 'statistic'.

Yay !
