What's best way to get Vienam's TV stations in the US?

I'm just planning ahead -just in case that my wife passes and gets a visa- and wondering what's the best way to get live Vietnamese programming on TV? I've seen satellite advertisements in the past but there's got to be some options.

Does anybody get Vietnam's TV stations here in America?

I know like zero Vietnamese people around here, so maybe TV could help my wife adjust to all the strangeness.

Wedding in Vietnam: 12/25/2005 (graduate school, below poverty line, couldn't apply)
[b]August 27, 2007[/b]: 1st I-130 packet sent w/incorrect $190 instead of new $355 fee (Mesquite, Texas).
October 6, 2007: 2nd I-130 packet with $355 fee (Mesquite, Texas).
January 10, 2008: NOA1 March 31, 2008: NOA2 (approved & sent to NVC)
April 14, 2008: NVC sent AOS Fee Bill (Affidavit of Support) $70.00 & DS-3032 form
Received.
April 15, 2008: Faxed wife the DS-3032 agent form to be mailed from Vietnam.
May 5, 2008: NVC sent request for Affidavit of Support form. May 19. 2008: received NVC's request for Affidavit of Support form.
May 20, 2008: Sent off I-864, Affidavit of Support May 30, 2008: Received IV Fee bill for $400 --money order & sent by Priority Mail.
June 10, 2008: I-864 approved. June 11, 2008: IV fee entered in system. June 16, 2008: DS-230 barcode issued
June 30, 2008: DS-230 mailed by expressed mail July 3, 2008: DS-230 package arrived at NVC & under review
July 11, 2008: Case completed at NVC.
Sept. 5th, 2008: INTERVIEW DATE at HCMC: White paper with writing.
March 26, 2009: Resubmit.
[b]DENIED. June 2009: case sent back & received at USCIS[/b]
August 2009: filed new I-130. Approved after first I-130 case sent to VN, again.
February 2010: USCIS contacted & asked for more evidence
March 2010: USCIS re-approved original case.
April 14, 2010: Consulate sends DS-230
June 15, 2010: Interview Date (Blue issued)
July 13, 2010 Placed on AP -yippee!
Sept. 13, 2010 Consulate home visit
[b]Nov. 5, 2010 Approval letter sent.[/b]
[b]Nov. 19, 2010 Visa picked up. Arrival: Nov. 24, 2010[/b]

I really don't know if any television service provider offers television stations that originate in Vietnam. In order to do that, the VN television station would have to transmit to a satellite, and then that satellite feed would have to be made available by the television service provider to their customers. If a local television service provider didn't offer it then you might be able to pick up the feed yourself with an "old school" satellite dish in your backyard, presuming the broadcast isn't encoded.

In California, most people have either cable or digital satellite service. In my area, Comcast cable offers one VN language station for an extra $10 per month - Saigon Broadcast Television Network, or SBTN, which I believe originates in Southern California. DirectTV offers three channels, including SBTN. Again, I believe all of the channels they offer originate in the US (I don't have DirectTV, so I don't know for certain). I'm not aware of any service here that offers channels that originate in Vietnam.

My wife and daughter missed some of the shows they used to watch in Vietnam, but there are a number of CD/DVD shops in the area that sell packages of episodes dirt cheap - like $20 for a stack of 10 DVD's. There are a couple of good shops at Grand Century mall in San Jose (an entirely Vietnamese shopping mall). A lot of the shows they like are also on YouTube. There are also plenty of online shops where you can buy DVD's and CD's.

So, my new family has VN language TV here at home, and is starting a collection of VN language DVD's. Strangely, they don't use either of them very much. Each of them has a netbook and a connection to my WiFi router, so they mostly just watch videos or play games on the internet.

Dish network has it as an option..

there are many stations online as well.. here is an example..

02-25-2009 : Payment Received from my bank (AOS)

03-04-2009 : NVC has received the Choice of Agent DS-3032 (Online)

03-04-2009 : IV Application Processing Fees $400 (Online)

03-05-2009 : Payment Received from my bank (IV APS)

03-07-2009 : DS-230, and I-864 Sent (by USPS)

03-12-2009 : USPS confirm arrived at NVC for DS-230, & I-864

03-13-2009 : NVC received DS-230, & I-864 (Case in progress)

03-20-2009 : NVC case completed in 1 week NVC completed 03-20-2009.

04-02-2009 : NVC Left to HCM city

05-12-2009 : Received a package IV from HCM Consulate by email

05-18-2009 : My wife got Pink.. yeah..

05-26-2009 : Visa received

06-18-2009 : US Entry!!! Yeah, my wife finally here.

07-20-2009 : Green card received by mail

09-15-2009 : Writting test from DVM.

11-03-2009 : Driving Test.

04-26-2011 : Received I-797 NOA with Receipt Number

Make sure one is using a firewall and antivirus software when accessing this site... I was just there looking for a movie for Thuy and got blasted with exe files....

I asked Phuong's uncle about this last night. His neighbor receives broadcasts from VN television stations. He needed a 40" digital satellite dish and a bootleg receiver box he paid $500 for to decode the broadcasts.

Slingbox. All you need is video feed, the slingbox unit and internet connection. I haven't tried this in VN, but in theory, it should work. you can watch they same thing ppl in VN are watching.

Keep in mind that VN filters what comes in and goes out of the country via the internet...I have tried several of the US movie sites like Hulu etc and they dont work in VN.... The bandwidth getting a movie feed from VN out through a slingbox could also be an issue...

Here in the Houston area we get three VN stations on the cable at a certain channel and pay no extra for them. I believe it is because there is a huge VN community here. I am not sure about the stations but was told one of them is a broadcast from VN itself. As mentioned before there are many shops that sell DVD's of VN language programming and my wife is getting a large collection and she gets them from friends she had met in school and they copy and pass them around so we never have to buy them. (Yes I understand the copyright issue and have tried to explain to my wife to no avail)

Your wife probably didn't understand because bootleg copies of those programs are available in markets all over Vietnam. Nobody there seems to care much. My wife has about a dozen collections of TV shows she bought at a DVD shop in San Jose. All are professionally produced by companies in the US. Not a single one of them has a copyright statement on it. :blush:

She hasn't been too interested in DVD's lately. She's found a gazillion videos to watch on YouTube.
