Actual questions during our interview in Bogota

My finace and I put together a list of questions we were asked during the second interview in Bogota Colombia. The consul first ask her questions while I was seated 20 feet away, lasting about 25 minutes. The consul then asked me the same questions with her seated the same place, my questions lasted a bit longer. We hope this helps some couple get a better idea of the type of questions asked during the interview.

Now about the questions, this was the second interview for her and my first. They were direct and to the point. They did not sugarcoat any of the questions. I still can not remember all the questions. The interview questions seem to be designed and presented in a way to keep you always off balance. Example, the consul ask about my family and I on Christmas and before I finished answering, she asked when did my fiance and I first have sex.

The consul then ask when was the last time we had sex. They always tried to keep pushing questions steadily.

Actual questions during our interview,

What are your hobbies? What hobbies does she have?

What are your favorite foods?

What gifts did you give to each other for christmas? Did you talk to each other on Christmas day?

What are your favorite sports? What sports does she like?

What sports do you play? What sports do you want to play together?

When you are not at work what do you do?

What is your occupation and where?

What hours do you work?

Do you send her money, how much?

How do you send her money? How often do you send her money?

Do you honesty intend to marry your fiance when she is in the US and stay married.

What do you do in your spare time?

Where did you spend christmas and who were you with? What did you buy each other for Christmas?

Who ask for marriage and when? Where did you propose, what day are you planning the wedding?

Where do you want to honeymoon, where do you want to get married (beach, church)? (I told the consul it was almost impossible to plan a honeymoon if we couln't plan a wedding until we had a visa in hand, she smiled)

Do you like coffee, how do like it prepared (sugar, cream, no sugar)? How do she like her coffee?

What are your Family members names and what type of work they do?

What time of the day do each or you work, where did you work before, and the name of the company?

How long have you both worked for your current employer?

How do you communicate, is your spanish good or her english good, which person calls and how many times a day do you talk, do you use the computer or telephone?

They never asked to see any additional evidence other than what I sent in my original packeage 7 months before. I even offered more proof of our comunication.

I understand its alot of questions and I am also positive its not all of the questions they ask us. I would like to see anyone add to the list for future coulpes.

My fiance and I walked out with a couple from Miami who were on their second interview, they also got the visa at the same time, they had the same type of questions with a different consul. This coulpe said thier consul ask if they used a condom. I think the embassy has switched gears or something. I can not remember reading anything before that describes this type of interview from Bogota.

Keep in mind this was our second interview. Its also difficult to present yourself well to an interview person, when you have to speak with a telephone looking through a bullet proof window. I always gave them more information than they asked for, I think it worked. I did not like the sex questions but, I am positive it was to try and throw us a curve ball. I answered honest as well as my fiance,

Something worked for us because we were approved for a Visa and the consul wished us luck in the future.

We hope this helps someone

I'd also like to add that I read a post from a couple in Jamaica who were also asked the same questions regarding sex. My guess is that they do this to make you uncomfortable to see how you answer the questions that follow.

This was a Stokes interview. It's surprising that you and your fiancee weren't totally sequestered when the other was being interrogated.

Stokes interviews are routine at the hellhole consulate in your neighboring country of Ecuador. The sex questions are also to be expected. Had I known then what I know now, I would have said, "Consul, that question is illegal in government and in the private sector. If you continue to press the matter, I insist on speaking with your Section Chief immediately. Neither of us wants this to happen, surely. Now, what is your next question on a different topic, please?"

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Tbone, is there any law that I should cite if we are asked about sex in our interview? I don't want the CO to ask why it is illegal.

I'm not aware of any laws, per se, but it's harassment. For what it's worth, an attorney told me that it was worth an "after-visa complaint" to the DoS. Actually, "I'm offended" is one of the strongest short sentences in the English language.

From the USCIS web site:

Adjudicator's Field Manual - Redacted Public Version \ Chapter 15 Interviewing

15.3 Officer Conduct and Appearance.

(a) Appearance .

It is imperative that the officer conducting the interview dress in a professional manner. Both males and females should wear appropriate business attire, although some offices may permit "business casual" attire on certain days.

(b) Conduct and Attitude .

All interviews should be conducted in a courteous and businesslike manner. The following guidelines will ensure that the interview is conducted professionally:

· Maintain control of the interview at all times. "Maintaining control" does not mean being overbearing or abusive; on the contrary, it requires that the officer maintain a professional demeanor at all times. The exact nature of that professional demeanor will sometimes vary, according to the interview techniques being employed (see below). The ability of the officer to maintain control of him/herself is instrumental in maintaining control of the interview.

· Speak clearly, distinctly and not too rapidly, using plain and simple language when questioning an applicant, petitioner or witness. Avoid complex and lengthy questions, and always obtain a responsive answer before proceeding to the next questions. Avoid USCIS jargon.

· At all times maintain due regard for the rights of the person being questioned.

· Avoid arguments with the person being interviewed, as well as remarks of personal nature that may be taken as a reflection of a judgment of a personal lifestyle.

· Refrain from making any extraneous comments, as they are irrelevant to the purpose of the interview and detract from the professional demeanor the officer should maintain. Do not make any comments which might be taken as a negative reflection upon any other person, race, religion, or country.

· Maintain professional conduct even if the interviewee becomes abusive or if derogatory information is developed.

· Be fair, courteous, and patient without diminishing in any degree full and complete development of the material facts, whether they be favorable or adverse to the person being interviewed or any other person.

· When questioning persons concerning sexual relations, always avoid questions which can be construed solely as prurient or prying.

· Ensure that your demeanor is unprejudiced, impartial, and creates no foundation for complaints that you have been unfair or have used any mistreatment or duress.

Thanks so much! I am thinking about printing a copy of the manual and taking it with me to the interview.

Edit: do you think that I really should ask to speak to the supervisor if we are asked this type of question?

Sorry about the double post, but I have a related question. Are you positive that the CO's that conduct the interview at a consulate abroad are supposed to follow this manual, or just USCIS officers within the United States?

Honestly, I do not know for sure since the CO's work for a different department of the government. But I have spend several hours online trying to find laws/guidlines/regulations....on what questions are legal/illegal to ask during the K129F interview. I have seen several posts stating questions were asked about sexual relations, and in my opinion, these questions are completely inappropriate for the K129F visa. This line of questioning has no relevance in determining a "bona-fide" relationship, so it kind of pushes my buttons that these questions are being asked. The above is the only thing I was able to find addressing this issue, so I thought I would post. But, I will continue to search and see if I can find something specifically for the State Department in regards to asking this line of questioning. If not, I will at the least print a copy of what I found above and take it with me to the interview also. And since we probably have 6-8 months before we get an interview day, I will have plenty of time to seach. LOL

Keep me informed. If I call a CO on a question, it would be really nice to have something really specific to cite, so that it doesn't appear that I am just bluffing. In general, I don't mind answering any questions as long as it helps us get a visa, but I have a feeling that these type of questions are really just evidence that they are looking to deny us. If I could say that the CO was not following protocol and that I needed to speak to the supervisor, I figure that it would give me a leg up. I am going to spend some time researching and will let you know if I find anything. Feel free to pm me.

Specifically, "the Section Chief." By the way, it would do us all a great favor if you can find out if the Section Chief of the (culprit) visa unit is still Phil Linderman.
