Forum Organization: Request for help

I want to take a few moments to get some feedback on the forum structure and organization. I noticed a few areas we are missing and potentially others that may be misplaced. One specific area of family immigration missing is "Adopting a Child". This seems like a logical addition. There may be other holes and in general areas that would be useful; I am open to suggestions and how to better structure the forums we have now :).

Thank you for your feedback in advance!!

I'd like to see a spot for people to talk about the immigration process for children on derivative visas. A lot of K-2 questions get lost, for example, when they go on to AOS etc. and I had also been reading that without some extra planning, K-4s can have age out issues (or something?) Especially with K-3s being converted to CR-1's, entire forms might be missing for the child!!

Me and my husband are looking some information too on how my husband can adopt my daughter,,,,i have been searching in the internet on how my husband can adopt my daughter here in the US but i did not find any information about the matter,,,mostly i found in the internet is how to adopt a child who hs no parents at all.

I beleive this would be good start to those who have a derivate and the USC husband would like to adopt the derivative of the mother.

I agree with this post, my fiancee has a child and she has already said she would like for her daughter to have my name.

I think the names of these forums should be changed:

- Adjustment of Status (Green Card) from Family Based Visas - because people keep thinking because they're married and now "family" that this is where they post and also because people who are petitioned for by family members think this is where they post (and I was told this is only for K1, K2, K3 and K4).

- AOS Case filing & progress - because the names for the student one and family one are the same. So perhaps "Adjustment of Status Case Progress/Updates (Family)" and "...(Other)"? I don't see the need for "filing" to be in the title personally...

I would like to see another thread about AOSing if you've been applied for as a family member (i.e. your mum or sister or something applied for you). I don't know enough about that process to know if it's similar to our (k1 etc) process

I would also like it if there could be example forms for each visa type. Right now for AOS there's only the K1 example, I think students etc could benefit from an example like their own. I don't know if it's basically the same but perhaps having "multi-options" will help people realise they apply to them too?

Also, I think it would be beneficial to have the ability to post "how to's" in each countries portal. Kinda like sticky's or something. Maybe change the name of portal to something more like "Country info" or something so people know their COUNTRY specific posts and notes are there? I know that Consulate Info has info about packets etc but I don't think many people realise what the "portal" is for. I know I didn't at first...

That's all for now :)

You make some good points. It is certainly confusing because our legacy here was K1, K3, etc and people entering the US with various other visa types such as work, student, etc visas are not as easily able to figure out where to post. It may be best to organize a bit more to help them too. This would also feed exactly in to your posts to add more "examples" for people with other visas filling the same forms (AOS for example should probably have several visa types as examples).

More comments are certainly welcome here. I think that organization is important and we could certainly benefit from a few changes that not only help the forums but integrate across the site in general.

Yes this would be good however a simple search in some instances can get the informaiton to the person. Every country has differnt requiremnts for children to be able to leave with one parent, then there are the children with no father listed on the BC. Having a forum to discuss this would be great. I try to answer these questions as much as possible but as this process is every changing some things I may have done in 2007 are differnt now. it is much faster i.e. on line payments etc.. . I learned an LPR does not have to file a seperate I-130 for the children on the same petition as the parent. It is in the guides but way done there.

Why is it that the only one who can stop the crying is the one who started it in the first place?

I have made some restructing to hopefully balance out a few areas that were lacking and causing people to not know where to post (and mis-posting). Hopefully that will help. I moved the IMBRA forum under the K-1 forum (was planned a long time ago but nearly forgotten (to move). A few other tweaks to forum category names and obviously a few new forums for non-family visa questions that frequently come up (should help to organize those).

More to come. I will try to fold more of the ideas above in as well :)!

I had a quick insight to kill two birds with one thermonuclear device:

Move Off Topic to the bottom of the list, followed by a newly created TOS Violation Discussions, Bans, and Suspensions.

Someone mentioned to me they were surprised not to see a section on "shipping stuff" to the US, at least SOMEWHERE. Just thought i'd mention it as an idea maybe in the "moving here and your new life in America" section as a sticky?? Like Countries and what companies for shipping stuff people use/used? Same with transferring money between countries?? (like I use paypal for that, the rates are the best i've seen)
