I don't get the problem with repealing this. There will still be an unofficial don't ask, don't tell - the information will not be asked for, and it is doubtful it will be volunteered overly much. The important thing is, when a military person is found out to be gay or straight, they can no longer be removed from duty. That's a basic right, is it not? Employment without discrimination?

Thank god No  A part of my job is to issue drilling guidlines for each specific well and it would have been my neck on the chopping block first. Maybe I should tone down my pirouettes.

I just got a picture in my head of a swan with its head on a chopping block. Very gruesome. helpsmilie.gif

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

that's the way it already is now.

Obviously the change they are intending to make is not 'how it is now.' It is time to realize homophobia is something you might suffer with, not something gay persons should shoulder the burden of.

what's amusing is if they don't do the repeal the right way, gays will be targetted/kicked out even more.

Don't Ask Don't tell prevented the military from investigating gays, just as much as it prevented gays from saying what they were out loud...

If they just repeal 'don't ask, don't tell' gays are still not allowed in the military and can now be targetted once again...

I realize the difficulty of gathering such data with the current policy and all, and I'm making a sweeping generalization, but I would be surprised if the number of gay men in the military was not very low. I know one gay ex-military.

Where do you get your disinformation? The legislation is designed to allow gays to openly, honestly, and to at last honorably serve in our armed forces. Like it or not, they are serving already, and have been forever under various policies including the current 'Don't Ask/Don't Tell' and even further back when they weren't technically allowed in the military.

You know, historically colored soldiers did not serve along whites. A lot of people had similar concerns about integrating colored and Caucasian soldiers, to yours regarding gays in the current debate. Thus we had units as recently as WWII of the Tuskegee Airmen, who performed very well by the way and saved many a Caucasian pilot's proverbial hind quarter. Many common sense types, such as yourself felt there was no way a colored man could be a good pilot, and of course were proved incredibly wrong.

Guess what happened with integration?

Over time, most people are able to logically overcome their previous bias' and prejudices. Some recognize their personal feelings, but are able to sublimate them without feeling the need to project their prejudice's on the rest of society. Others of course can't evolve, so what category do you consider yourself?

comparing black people or any other 'race' to gay people is very erroneous.

Two very different scenarios.

You are half correct. See Paul, back in the day, black people were considered different in ways not at all dissimilar to how some consider gays different. To be sure the analogy is not perfect, but what I am telling you is that much of what you consider well reasoned logic with regards to gays serving in the military along side straight soldiers today comes from the same well reasoned thinking of persons concerned about blacks serving in the military alongside whites, and commanding whites back in the day.

If history shows you nothing about how erroneous, and biased the thinking was regarding blacks serving alongside whites back in the day, then you won't see how such thinking is reflected in your current attitude.

1939 Blacks are DIFFERENT, they should not be able to serve alongside of, and command whites.

2010 Gays are DIFFERENT, they should not be able to serve alongside of, and command straights.

In the future your views on gays serving openly in the military will resemble how most folks view blacks serving side by side of, and in command of whites today i.e. what was the fuss about?

The fact that you cannot differentiate in controlled behaviour versus uncontrollable things is interesting here.

Hell, even the black community cannot stand their struggle being connected to 'gay rights'

Be it straight or gay, the actions that take place because of what you are attracted to are behaviours. Nothing more and nothing less.

Comparing skin color to bahaviour is completely absurd.
