Confused about EAD

I am a bit confused about the process to work with EAD. My husband got an email last night that his card production has been ordered. Is he able to find work now? He has a job lined up. They said he needs his working papers first though.... Also can he get a job with just the EAD? Or does he have to wait for the SSN to actually come in? It take a while for the SSN and EAD cards to actually arriv in hand.

Also, last question, does he have to wait for the EAD in hand to apply for socil or can he print the letter he recieved and try?? ^Thanks guys

Once the EAD is hand he can work without a SSN (the letter itself is not valid). I'm not sure if the SS office will accept the letter or not, its probably worth a try.

He will get the card in about a week and he will need it to get a SSN. He can start working but his pay check will be held until he provides the SSN.

OP, he can work as soon as he has the EAD in hand but he will also need an SSN to do so. If he doesn't have an SSN yet he will take the EAD to the SSA to apply for one. A few days after applying he should be able to call the SSA and find out the number. He shouldn't need the physical card to apply for work, just the number. Mine took about 5 days to get the physical card.

Well I don't think you need to have a SSN to accept a job, but obviously you can't be placed on a payroll without one.

After further research I found a SSA link that stated you don't NEED a SSN to start work, but you need to have at least applied for one and you can take that letter of receipt (you ask for a receipt at the time of applying) as proof you've applied.

Hi Amma&Yaw,

Vanessa and Tony informed me of something important that I should pass on to you. In order to accept and start the job, its a good idea to make sure you have applied for a number and that you get a receipt of application from the SSA to show the employer when they ask about your SNN. (Assuming you get a job offer prior to getting your SSN.)

Don't get would up about the SSN too much. Our daughter, who is a USC, just started another part-time job (she is a student) and the employer asked to see her SS card. Messy as she is, she couldn't find it, so after 2 weeks of procrastinating she finally made it to the SS Administration to apply for a new card. All this time she worked, and so can your husband. Important is that he is "authorized" to work in the USA, as this is one of the questions he will have to answer when applying for a job.

Authorization comes either in form of the EAD, or the Green Card. Since his card production has been ordered, the card will arrive in a few days, perhaps even earlier than the EAD. What he can do is take the letter to the prospective employer and show that his Green Cars is "in the mail." The employer doesn't have to accept it, but he might.
