I think there's been a fine line lost in 'capable' and 'incapable' - at least here in the US.

There are plenty of able people who jus leech the system because it's easy enough. Especially if you're a female who gets knocked up. Free housing, free food, free spending money, and you get even more if you pop out another kid.

They should hire doctors and psychologists to determine if people are healthy and capable and then give them a time limit for the amount of time they can be on the system before they get cut-off and forced to work...

Welfare-to-work programs do work and are a great thing if an area is willing to have them.

Also there should be madatory drug testing for those on welfare as well, and things like alcohol should be blocked from their benefit cards.

I don't think people would mind so much having their taxes raised to help pay for having these kinds of systems maintained properly. I realize that finding solutions is easier said than done and I don't have the answers but there's got to be better ways of managing these kinds of things than we do right now.

Your comments on "knocked up women" are extremely offensive. Where in the world do you get the idea that women get knocked up and want to live on welfare?? It is every sane woman's desire to provide the best for their kids, and living on welfare is not a free pass that knocked-up women seek! I have never been a single mom, nor come from a single parent household. However, most of the single moms I know work 2-3 jobs trying to put food on the table, clothes on the back, and a roof over their heads. Where do you come off accusing "knocked up women" for getting a free ride?

This is painful for me to admit but there are a lot of people like this. Some of it is down to few opportunities but there's this "what has this country every done for me? I'll take what I can get" attitude. In places where it is common, they think the same - they will just come out and say it because there is no shame in it for them. There seems to be little variation, they drop out of school, no college, their parents often had them young, no goals for the future e.t.c It is so sad that I met so many people who's only focus is to make it to the weekend so they can get hammered.

I have to commend you. Not too many people on here know how to post and article and follow it up with their own opinion.

The UK needs to look at adopting a number of anti-bludger measures used by Australia that were put in place by the liberal party there.

I remember reading an article a few years back where a professor who had more than six kids quit work because he received more fringe benefits being on welfare than while working.

I try. I'm just waiting for someone to go "OMG stop talking about your f###ing life already!", but what can I say? Opinions shouldn't come from nowhere and while individual experiences don't count for everything they give a little authority. I try not to say sh!t when I don't know what I'm talking about

That last part doesn't surprise me at all >.<

I really have to go, I've love discussing things on VJ lately (need the mental stimulation for sure...) but I'm getting behind in my work and Miles is looking at me like he wants a new mum who will play with him

Of course there are people like that. Most of these women probably have mental or psychological issues, and end up living unproductive lifestyles. And even so, I'd rather they get some form of welfare so that the kids do not have to go hungry for something that they had no control over.

However, these kind of people are few and too far in between. Most of the single moms are like Smoke's mother who work 3 jobs to take care of their kids. And good number of these single moms are former housewives who have no marketable skills and have to take low paying jobs to make ends meet. Welfare is designed to help such women & children in situations exactly like that.

Always the excuses. So entire communities have mental conditions now do they? If you cannot afford to have kids, then why have them in the first place? There is just no excuse for a women with multiple kids from multiple fathers.

What you ignore is that there is a huge problem in America with the AA community of being single parents. I posted and article a year back about it and as I recall, the president spoke about it too.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

The story isn't about African Americans or the USA, it's about the UK.

There is a recession on you know, it's not like there aren't millions of people out of work and need unemployment to get them through the rough patch.

Surely the best way to help Brits get back on their feet is to allow even more to enter from Eastern Europe. Therefore, to compete with workers that are willing to do the work for half the price. Then have some idealist PM label anyone speaking up against this idiocy as a bigot.

Funny how this strategy has worked equally as well in both the UK and the US. Whereas, the opposite is what's actually successful, as in significantly increased the living standard, in both Canada and Australia.

I'm sure I have told you this many times before - but the UK government cannot, under EU law, prevent citizens of EU countries travelling to the UK and taking residence and jobs there. The only way to do that is to withdraw Britain from the EU - something that is only being proposed by fringe parties like UKIP or the BNP.

The new government has announced a cap on immigration from outside the EU zone, but as 80% of the immigrants come from EU countries - it's little more than hot air.

If there was ever an argument for immigration and border control, it's the EU. - Still trying to figure out what idiot came up with that idea. Probably the same ones who want a "One World Government"

You do realise that the policy isn't one way - and there are countries in the EU besides those in Eastern Europe.

Personally, I quite like being able to travel all over Europe without needing a travel visa.

So then don't complain about the poverty and welfare society so prevalent in the UK. I understand being able to travel freely around Europe but allowing people to pick up and move from countries that don't have an equal minimum wage or quality of life is ridiculous. I'd stay on the dole too, if having to work only resulted in a 20% increase in income over welfare. Furthermore, didn't come with 1/5 the fringe benefits.

What do you think would happen if Canada and Australia opened up their borders with the US? I guarantee you this USA USA would go out the window and people by the hundreds of thousand would be migrating. Now, what do you think this would do to Canada and Australia's Q.O.L? Furthermore, to the wages in the country.

Erm... I don't complain about it.

The reality is that the government has to cut public spending, and a part of that involves reassessing people on long term disability benefit. Seems reasonable and clear to me.

I was generally speaking.

The disability pension is a problem in AUS too, rampant with abuse. The government uses private investigators and checks cases of people under 55. Furthermore, they have a range of hotlines where you can report a bludger abusing the system. Australia has an extremely generous welfare system, but we all hate dodgy bastards abusing the system.

The truth is offensive? Come on now.... Stop that.

I never said all women who get knocked up. I said the situation was beneficial for women who get knocked up. So chill.

Your post might be slightly less offensive if you said "get pregnant" or "have a baby" rather than "knocked up".

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.

"get pregnant" and "have a baby" are terms reserved for those who became "with child" of normal means rather than trying to scam the welfare system.

So those trying to scam the welfare system did not become pregnant the regular way?
