Seriously though, the answer to this problem is indeed, in my opinion, tough enforcement. 1st DUI: ok, you're an idiot, and you're going to pay, but you'll live. 2nd DUI: 10 yrs in prison. 3rd DUI: life. The state I live in treats DUIs like parking violations. That has to change.

I think thats a bit extreme. I'd take your sentence and apply it driving licenses though. IE 3 DUIs and no license for the rest of your life.

Unfortunately, at least in my state, taking a license away doesn't mean jack. I can't tell you how many times I've read about someone driving drunk & plowing into a family w/ an already suspended or revoked license. Revoking a license doesn't seem to be much of a deterrent. I'd be willing to negotiate the prison term a bit, but time behind bars should be mandatory from the 2nd DUI on - that's the only way to keep these people off the road.
