A baby boy from the U.K. was burned on over 40 percent of his tiny body while his mother sunbathed beside him, The Sun reported.

Shocked beachgoers called police in Brighton, England and the 5-month-old boy was rushed to a nearby hospital.

"The baby was clearly very sunburned,” Alex Coulson, who tried to warn the mother, told the newspaper. “He was naked and very, very red and I was concerned enough to walk up to her. I pointed to blisters that were forming on the boy's leg and was saying, 'sunburn, sunburn' — but she didn't get it.”

It had been one of the hottest days of the year with temperatures hitting 77-degrees.

"His condition is stable and his mother is with him,” a hospital spokeswoman said.

The 29-year-old mom could face charges of neglect.

"No arrests have been made but the matter has been passed to colleagues who will check to ensure there are no child protection issues," a Sussex Police spokesman said.

that's hot for england. I think I read that the hottest temp ever recorded in England was in 2006 and it was like 37c.

The highest temperature ever recorded in England was 38.5C (101.3F) in Faversham, Kent, on 10 August 2003.

This was on the news the other night. Pretty sad - easy to condemn the mother, but people can and do make mistakes, especially with a first child.

I expect she feels terrible about this.
