From rocks to coins, pacifiers and toys, kids like to taste everyday objects. But some of these items can be serious choking hazards – take circular batteries.

The 20mm lithium batteries are described as a common culprit in a study published in Pediatrics.

The research published in the journal this week reported a 6.7-fold increase in the percentage of severe outcomes caused by battery ingestion in the last 24 years. The severity of the battery-related incidents has worsened, causing injuries including the destruction of the esophagus, perforation of the aorta and vocal cord paralysis.

The batteries look like buttons somewhere between the size of a nickel and a penny. Or perhaps they even look like candy to a small child, but they pack a punch. The batteries are large enough to get lodged and obstruct breathing.

Once swallowed, the stuck battery can create a current, burning through the child’s esophagus, airway or even the aorta, said Dr. Toby Litovitz, the executive medical director of the National Poison Center.

Parents should childproof everyday electronics such as calculators, flashlights, cameras and talking books by reinforcing the battery compartment with tape, she advised. Children can easily snap open the latches to get to the batteries.

So babies and children poisoned because they chewed and sucked toys that were designed for children but used lead based paint were just accidents that could not have been foreseen and avoided? That's life?

If things need to be banned or changed because they cause harm then how is that so terrible? Why are you so contemptuous that people care and want to avoid harm? With all these things, the problems are assessed and judgments made on how best to avoid accidents in the future. What a terrible thing to do, right?

If things need to be banned or changed because they cause harm then how is that so terrible? Why are you so contemptuous that people care and want to avoid harm? With all these things, the problems are assessed and judgments made on how best to avoid accidents in the future. What a terrible thing to do, right?

lead based paints have been banned is a lot more than just toys.... toys are one thing, entire bans are another. Especially on a product that has more durability/is generally safe overall.

I don't have a beef with legitimate things being changed, but when a singular instance or even an instance than effects less than 1% of the population or better yet less than 1% of those who use a product, then it's not exactly worth the fuss over and is always activism on behalf of the victims.

Once again, that displays contempt for those who seek redress for harm they have come to through no fault of their own. Why shouldn't victims have people seeking to help them do that? Why is that so terrible?

There is a question of where do you draw the line between keeping kids safe and parental responsibility. A parent should know to keep pennies (also deadly if swallowed due to internal damage) and these little batteries well away from babies. Our phones and other electronic pieces are not teething toys and while it's impossible to keep everything away from a little one (feels like we say "no" 3000000 times a day as it is), you know you're not going to be able to take your eyes off of them while they have these things.

Those darts were toys but they were not meant to be put in the mouth. It was sad the way it happened but did it deserve a recall? Again would like to mention the case of 10 year old who died of suffocation putting his head in a sandbox trying to be Gara - you can't ban all play sand because a 10 year old kid did something unclever. You can't protect everyone from themselves.

Maybe a warning is pertinent for new parents (by who? Dunno maybe pediatricians or something?) for items that can cause death other than by obvious choking. A kid who did swallow one of those things could do so in a second and you might not see it, then you're not going to know what is causing their suffering until it's too late.

and that's exactly what makes you a problem in this society. Just 'ignore' that of which you do not understand or actually try and debate an issue reasonably. Just point out that you don't like it and ignore them. Yup, that's the real mature way to go about things.
