I am definately not an Obama fan but.

$5.5 M earned

$1.79 M tax paid equals 32.5% tax paid

$8,000 refund not much compared to $1,790,000 paid = 0.0045%

I had a $8,500 refund, filed short form with standard deductions, and did not make close to $5.5 M or pay $1.7 M

Well, I guess if you overpay your taxes in the U.S. they should just not bother to refund it. Now there is a novel approach and would probably help greatly with the deficit.

I fail to see the significance of the refund in this context. All that says is that the First Family overpaid their federal taxes by 8K. So what?

There's something magical about getting a tax refund. You know it's your money that they held for a while. You are getting your money. But it feels so amazing. Like you hold the check and run through the meadows singing a love song. Then you go cash the check and treat yourself to the biggest sundae you can buy with your money. Then once you are all cool and calm you realise, you forgot to tell your wife about the refund. So she puts off buying that dishwasher that she's been eyeing for 7 months.

I wonder if Obama feels like this.

He should actually. Any earnings over $350K should be taxed at 45%.
