In simple terms what is the difference between a K3 & CR1

I can't see this simply anywhere and I am just wondering what the differences are... What are the advantages of one over the other... which one is shorter / cheaper / easier?

Am thinking about marrying in the UK (for a few reasons) rather than filing a K1, so wondered what my options were

A moot point entirely since 2/1/2010. Obviously, you haven't read any threads here or the visa comparisons in the Guides. K3 was instituted in 2001 to reunite families faster (in about 18 months instead of four years for a CR1) but since late 2006, it really only saved a month or two until three months ago when the National Visa Center's new policy effectively killed the K3 visa. At this point the CR1 process has sped up so that 6 to 8 months is the norm, not 4 years.

Thank you very much for the links - I get it now, makes more sense than what I had read. Like the idea of not having to wait for a work permit etc.

So... next question - I am considering marriage before applying for my visa but would it just be better / easier to go for a K1 and marry in 90? Or is the CR1 a better option.

'which visa to apply for' is always a personal choice, with personal factors (best not posted here) to consider, between the two humans involved.

Can't help you to choose 'which visa to apply for' but - a K-1 visa holder has the same issues as a K-3, mostly.

thank you so much for replying.yes my mother is a us citizens. would you please tell me which visa.thank you

Is your mother the petitioner or is it your stepfather? You are the eventual visa applicant. The US Citizen is a "petitioner". In either event, the visa would be IR2. Immediate Relative Child of US Citizen.
