Just started reading it myself a couple days ago. It sounds interesting, but the author makes a lot of assertions in the intro and first chapter. I hope he plans to back that up with verifiable facts instead of relying on "I have some insiders whose names I can't reveal". If not, it probably belongs in fiction, as opposed to non-fiction. I also noticed that a few conclusions drawn were based soley on opinion, and could be interpreted in a completely different light by someone else.

Agreed. Granted Thailand is a mess right now, but compared to the surrounding countries they seem to be doing ok. I'm surprised he didn't intervene in this latest problem. I remember when Thaksin won his last "election" He went on TV gloating about it, even though no other parties participated. The king summoned him, and after that he was on TV crying.

I wont be sweet like Anya. Arisman, Thaksin, and the rest of his ilk need to be shot on sight. The Embassy will not be open for awhile. Downtown Bangkok is destroyed. Getting a police report isn't going to happen for awhile.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if the US embassy opens in a week, I'll be shocked.

Well, here is the latest in the Bangkok Post: "The rally by the UDD since March 12 ended on Wednesday with several private and government buildings in Bangkok and other provinces being burned and many shops looted.

The Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation pointed to armed men and radical members of the red shirts as being behind the carnage.

But Mr Abhisit said a foreigner was suspected of being involved in the arson and an investigation into this suspect was under way.

Acting government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn said: "A white Westerner was involved in the arson attack on CentralWorld, convincing them to set fire to it. And an Asian was also involved in the arson attacks on the banks."

Mr Panitan did not give any names but a video of a British man urging the burning and looting of the shopping mall, taken several days before it was set on fire, has been circulating on the YouTube video sharing website.

The man was identified by the British media as Jeff Savage, a resident of Pattaya. In interviews he reportedly defended his conduct but said he did not take part in the arson attack."

It's conspicuously & thoroughly documented.

Paul Handley documents everything that can be documented by references to any/all quotes.

It's very scholarly, even if he was a journalist.

He tries to be even-handed and not find fault where there is no actual evidence of fault.

He never paints the king in an evil light, but shows how he may have miscalculated

or been given bad advice in this or that situation. Some around him could definitely

be viewed as evil. The overall view is the the King is human, subject to human weaknesses

just like all of us are.

Such associations & conclusions would still (and have) run afoul of the lèse-majesté laws.

The book is banned in Thailand.

Because of his words (they were VERY clear about what he wanted to see done)

he will have a very hard time wiggling out of conspiracy/terrorism charges. That

would make other farangs and Brits in particular possible victims of vigilante

reprisals, unless Thailand returns very very quickly to it's former peaceful demeanor.

The actual facts are more likely that he was SO drunk that he mistook the

riot for "Walking Street" and he was thinking that the Watts riots were

some kind of 1960's Yank party that Thais were re-creating for his entertainment

as an European tourist.

I love how some folks on here take the slightest opportunity to turn someone's statement into something political.

The book is a fascinating history of Thailand under the king and it's not for me to build him up or knock him down

but I am trying to understand him; no doubt things will be different when he's gone but that's up to Thais to decide,

not anybody here.
