Eso como que sería medio contradictorio... un bolicua que hable/escriba bien el idioma... pero gueno, algunos tuvimos buenos profesores de castellanooooo... En fin, ya tengo a mi santandereana que me endereza muuuyyy bien la lengua cuando la tuerzo con espanglish o anglicismos que no caben en nuestro idioma...

No mas con la palabra Parquear que tanto se usa en Colombiano perdemos el derecho de quejarnos de los anglicismos de nuestros hermanos Latinos. Y encima de eso, se ven cada dia mas "pochismos" en Colombia.

Igual, creo que es bueno tratar de hablar los dos lenguajes correctamente, pero no al mismo tiempo.

Make sure those novios/novias or esposos/esposas are practicing their English! They will be in the U.S. soon. Trying to read the last page or two of this forum makes me think I am back in Bogota!

That's one thing I'm worried about. My husband speaks almost zero English (even though he says he can speak a little... uhmm no true) and I really hope he can pick it up quickly. I'm not giving him any other choice but to learn it, and learn it well.

The best part is when they try to pronounce anything with a SH sound because they'll pronounce it as a CH. My husband keeps saying "I like to go fiching" and "I like to eat fich". I say "It's actually fishing and fish"... so he'll say "fiching and fich". Hi-la-rious!

I know!!! We lived in Vegas for like 10 years and my mom kept saying "Vamos al Sunset Estation" or "Palace Estation". I finally had to say "Mom, the last letter of the word goes together with the first of the next". She now pronounces it correctly.

My new wife doesn't speak very much English at all. Luckily, we will live in Houston for the time being and half the city speaks Spanish. Also, I don't really expect her to work for a few years so she can spend some time taking intensive English classes.

She only has one word to worry about.

Con tanto colombianismo rampante en su madre patria le comento que ni quejarme ni llorar haré como buen boricua jejeje... ¡pero es tenaz tratar de no dar tanta papaya idiomática!

With so many colombian colloquialisms in your mother country I inform you that I won't complain or cry like a good boricua hehehe... but its amazing trying not to make so much idiomatic papaya!

Nahhh... even with Congress voting English into actual officiality in the States as recently as a few days ago... hanging out in most cities in the States doesn't require Shakespeare's tongue. Unless, of course, they decide to go all-out-Patriot-Actish on people with language all of a sudden...

Nevertheless, I do agree that English needs to be practiced quite a lot. I crack up running into Colombians down there that studied their year of inglés en Oxford, ay ay ay...

i'm fortunate to live in an area where there are very few latinos so my wife will learn much faster than if i lived in or near a hispanic community. i'm happy that my wife really wants to learn and has been practicing a lot, to the point of being able to answer my questions in very good english, if i ask them slowly of course. i grew up in jackson heights ny and anyone who knows this area knows that it has a large latino community. one of the problems with arriving to an area like this is that people get too comfortable and don't feel a need to learn english and learn it well. i have seen countless numbers of people live here for 20 years and speak like they just arrived yesterday. unless they are self motivated or pushed by someone, what ever people pick up is just enough to get by but certainly not enough to be considered fluent. this is a problem that i want my wife to avoid falling into and she knows that the first 2 years are crucial to learning. just like you guys, i make sure to point out the universal mistakes made by latinos, like when "you" is pronounced "jew". i know that when we have kids, they will speak, read and write both languages perfectly.
