Passport renewal...travelling within 6 months of it expiring?

Is it advisable to travel back to Canada with a Cdn passport which expires within 6 months? I can't remember if they frown on that or not, I thought somewhere I heard they did.

I'm renewing it when I'm back in a couple weeks, but I need to get there first :)

I don't think they actually do anything, they'll probably just remind you to get a new one. My MIL went to the Phillipines with an almost expired passport and they just reminded her to get a new one as soon as she got home when she entered back into the US.

Udella&Wiz-I don't know about travelling by air.....But...

I do know that travelling by land you can go to Canada with an expired passport (or soon to expire) and come back to the USA, with no problems...

Likewise, I travelled to Canada (by land) last year (2009) to renew my Canadian passport...which was already expired..(it expired in January...but I went to Canada to renew it in February)

I just showed the Canadian border guards my expired Canadian passport..to go into Canada with...

And the American border guards my expired Canadian passport and valid US green card....to come back to the USA with....

I just told them "I went to Canada for 45 mins...To renew my Canadian passport..." (and showed them the reciept too)..No problems....:)

You are a Canadian citizen...you can go into Canada anytime with proof of Canadian citizenship...:thumbs:

They have to let you in, regardless, after all you are Canadian!:)

Just tell them you are going to go to Canada to renew your passport and to visit..And you shouldn't have any problems either

As for travelling to another country...You would need a valid passport and/or other travel documents....So you might have inquire further about that...

And yes, apply in-person for a Canadian passport rather than by mail.....It's a lot quicker and a lot better this way....(from applying in-person, it only takes about 2 weeks or so for a new passport to be mailed to the USA...)

It took only two (2) months to be approved. Hooray!

December 5, 2009 - I-485 application was submitted.

January 12, 2010 - I-485 application was re-submitted due to address error.

January 20, 2010 - I-485 application receipt notice arrived.

January 25, 2010 - Biometrics notice arrived.

February 9, 2010 - Biometrics taken at local USCIS office.

March 5, 2010 - Initial Interview notice arrived.

April 15, 2010 - Employment Authorization Card arrived out of blue.

As far as I know the only issue with this 6 month timeframe you mention is related to when you get your CR1 or other visa stamps; you must have a passport that is current and not about to expire within 6 months. I'm not aware of any other issue with it. It's valid until it expires and you should renew it before it expires. :lol:

Some countries have special entry requirements that require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months prior to entry ( http://www.ppt.gc.ca/support/faq.aspx?lang=eng&id=1201 ). Canada is not of of them :)

Other useless info I found while surfing:

Some countries have a strict 6-month validity rule in place. If your passport expires within 6 months of your date of arrival you will be turned away at immigration, if not before at your departure airport. These include: Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, UAE, Brazil, Ecuador, Indonesia, Israel, Malaysia, Paraguay, Tunisia, Romania, Singapore and surprisingly, Belgium.

Other countries enforce a 3-month rule. These include: Cambodia, Denmark, Fiji, Switzerland, South Africa, New Zealand, Croatia and Estonia

Many countries however require only a valid passport for the duration of your stay. Among these are: Kenya, Tanzania, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, Malta, UK and USA.

There are some exceptions: EU citizens only ever need a valid passport, regardless of date, to travel in other EU countries. US citizens need only a driving license or valid passport to enter Canada, Mexico, Bahamas and any US overseas territories such as Puerto Rico.

I got the biggest jerk at the Peace Bridge on my way into Canada last month. He even wanted me to provide him proof of my US residency. blink.gif I was like.... buddy..... I'm a Canadian. You cannot NOT let me into the country. blink.gif ***hole.

If I thought that was bad.... you should have heard the Canadian guy at the Nexus interview. He was yelling at me accusing me of all kinds of felonies. The American officer came and rescued me! That guy was just plain psycho. Thank you nice kind American officer. rose.gif Screw U big bad Canadian. mad.gif

You're good to go, Udella. laughing.gif I'll drive up with you. I'm leaving in two weeks, too. lol
