Does my wife have to apply for a SSN

Hi all, My wife got here a week ago and she was an IR1. Does she have to apply for a SSN or does she get one sent to her without her applying for it.??? Pls move if off topic for this forum.

If she 'ticked the box' on the DS-230, though - and is expecting one because of it, well - it'####### or miss - some ppl get it, some ppl don't.

Now that you mention it , I remember she did check the box on the DS 230. I guess we will wait a couple of weeks and if we dont see it in the mail, we will go and get her one.

I marked YES on the DS.230 form, I was supposed to get it within 3 weeks since I got it but I didn´t, so we went to an SSO and applied for one. The officer told me we should go there as soon as I got here.

I checked off the box on the DS-230 as well but went to the local SSO to apply. I was told they preferred applicants to wait three weeks after POE to apply, I was there (luckily) three weeks to the day, applied, had my card 6 days later. Good luck!
