I applied for the Capital One® Classic Platinum Credit Card as it was recommended in another thread as a good one to apply for if you were new to the country. Got denied for not having any credit history  . I wrote back to them quoting their website which indicates that this is for people that are new to the country and wish to build credit history and they just said that I couldn't have a card as my name did not appear anywhere with the three main credit agencies.:angry::angry: A total waste of time! I have decided not to have a US credit card, and am using my UK ones.

I've got utilities in my name and a lease agreement with Aarons, a slower route to building credit I know, but it'll have to do!

I believe that when you receive SSN and have no credit, you need to pull your credit report from all three agencies for them to create a file for you. Now that Capital One pulled your credit report, a record for your name should have been created and you should try again with somebody else. Don't give up :)

BTW, utility companies don't report to credit agencies unless you are really late :) Or maybe some weird ones do, but I doubt it's building your credit score.

I've heard of people getting denied by Capital One for not having credit but my husband and others I recommended it to didn't have a problem at all. I say keep trying until someone approves you or do what others have done and that's to get a secured credit card with your bank. You just give them $200-$500, depending on the bank, as collateral to open a secured credit card and after a year or so you qualify to get a real credit card.

And as OCPlastique mentioned, utility companies don't report to credit agencies unless you never pay your bill. When I got my last car loan they told me that the previous loan creditor had stopped reporting my account to the credit agencies, when I asked them why they said it was because it costs money to do it, so they chose not to.

Best way to build credit is to have a credit card and use it.

My application for a green card just got approved.

And I'm having the same problem - got denied twice today trying to apply for credit cards.

But I've heard about another thing - called PREPAID CARD. Like a phone, lol, u put money on it and then use it, or something like that... also the bank will charge you for that - sounds absolutely rediculous, but apperantly it works and they report to the credit agencies.

Tomorrow I'm gonna try to get one of those, since looks like I dont have any other choice.

I'll tell you all how it went.

My parents told us, my husband and I, to try Orchard bank. The interest rate is high but they'll approve almost any body. If you're just starting out, it's the way to go. They approved my mom when she filed bankruptcy. It really helped her fix her credit up. My husband and I just had this problem, as we needed to buy a car and no one would loan us money.

Luckily I'm not desperate for a great credit score as we are not in the market for a mortgage and I don't need car loans etc., but it would be nice for a store card :) It's just very irritating when you have a lifetime of excellent credit in another country, for that to count for nothing here. We have Experian and Equifax in the UK, why on earth do Equifax and Experian in the USA not talk to their UK counterparts? The information is only an email away!!!

However, thanks DamianandKelly for the tip. I've looked at the Orchard Bank website and gone through the questions and they will give me a card. Much appreciated.
