I've received a check from my car insurance company in Canada today and went to my bank today and they said the routing # is different so they can't deposit it in...

I have had to deposit a couple cheques from my old Canadian insurance company. Here's what the bank is suppose to do...

They are to send it to "collections" to verify the funds. Once verified, it will be adjusted to the days exchange rate and deposited in your account. The cost is $10 and can take 1-2 weeks. Nuts, I know, but all banks can deposit a Canadian check, they just may make it sound like a bigger issue than it is. If you are expecting any other checks from Canada, I would suggest opening an other account with a bank that will provide you with better service.

Good Luck

Honestly, I would call around or stop into the different banks in your area.

Different banks have different 'rules'.

Tell them what you are wanting to do, and go with the bank that is going to give you the least hassle and the least fees.

Seriously, it's just Canada, I really don't see what the problem is other then they don't want the 'hassle',

in which case their customer service sucks and you should leave their bank as they are unable to suit your needs as a customer.

It's not impossible.

Put the shoe on the other foot...how many times do you think a Cdn bank cashes an American cheque? This has been discussed many times in the Cdn forum and just because we're next door neighbours, I wouldn't expect them to be able to do this easily. And people are still surprised when it happens to them

There are a few lucky people whose banks don't have a problem with it, but most will eitehr charge some huge fee...because basically not only are you asking them to cash a cheque in a foreign currency, but they have to process it and send it back etc etc....just like doing it between 2 Cdn banks. And what if it bounces? Can you imagine the hassle for the bank then?

I am being blunt here....I made the mistake in the past thinking it shouldn't be a big deal either....but you live in a different country...cripes they can't even share Ketchup recipes :)

This is exactly what happened to me. I was able to deposit the cheque too. Mine took a bit longer, about 3 weeks or so, but it can be done. Chase bank does it. Not sure about other banks though

I wonder if it's because you're in Michigan and closer to the border? It may be more common to them. In Virginia....you'd think I came in with 3 heads or something.

I gave up a long time ago trying to make sense of something, the banks here simply seem to have a policy tat they don't do it and frankly I'm not about to pay a $10 fee. Anything I've ever received, I endorse and send back to my parents and they'll deposit it in my Cdn account.

Pffft, US banks can do this. They have to route it through collections and it might cost a bit and take awhile, but they can. I did it twice and it took about 10 days for the cheques to clear and cost 10 bucks each, but banks can do it. They're just being lazy. Talk to customer service and not the tellers, that might get you farther.

Good to know  I haven't had the need to cash or deposit anything in CDN funds here yet but I bank with Chase so that's good to know. With regard to depositing US cheques with a Canadian bank; I never had any difficulty doing that with CIBC; they didn't even blink an eye, just took the cheque and adjusted the value based on the current exchange.

My bank, a local credit union, could not cash a Canadian cheque but could deposit it. There is apprarently a very sharp distinction between those two operations, but most people conflate them. I don't know precisely what their internal operations are but, just as they said, it took about a week to show up in my account. I don't recall whether the exchange rate was good or bad though.

The always fun thread of trying to cash a Cdn cheque, lol! It can be a huge hassle!! Some get lucky and their bank handles the situation with ease, that sure wasn't my experience with Wachovia in Arlington VA. Was a nightmare, lol I eventually learned to deal with 1 branch and 1 teller! Yes, if that teller wasn't there, I turned around and left and came back later. Otherwise it was a nightmare:

-Once they tried to charge me a $75 fee to deposit a $100 cheque!! Hmmmmm I dont think so

-Accepted the cheques just fine, BUT week later I got the cheque back in the mail stating the amount had to be over $200 and yes of course they took the $$$ out of my acct with no notice.

- many incorrect charges, etc etc etc!!

Then I just signed up with customhouse.com. Mailed nay cheques back home to my folks in Stoon, they had my bank card and would just deposit the cheque into my CDn bank acct that I still have open! Good times, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
