SEATTLE -- The Seattle City Council unanimously voted Monday to boycott Arizona in protest of their recent law that cracks down on illegal immigration.

The resolution cuts city-related travel and other ties to Arizona. Among the items in the boycott, the city government will not buy Arizona-based goods, send government people to meetings in Arizona, and will not sign any contracts with businesses based in Arizona.

Other cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles have already pledged similar boycotts and the Tacoma City Council is taking up a similar proposed boycott on Tuesday.

The Arizona law requires local and state law enforcement officers to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they're in the country illegally.

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn was already personally boycotting Arizona over the immigration measure and was pleased the council took up the matter to make it city policy.

"Seattle is home to the most diverse zip code in the nation," McGinn said in a statement released prior to the vote. "For communities to thrive, we need to uphold basic principals and values of fairness, family, and opportunity for all."

The city of Phoenix is estimating it could lose $90 million in tourism money over the next five years due to boycotts.

The best thing that will come of this idiotic "feel good" publicity stunt is that word will make its way to Mexico and the illegal aliens in the other states/cities in the USA that crack down on illegal aliens and these people will flock to Seattle by the millions. Flock to LA, Austin, and San Francisco too. Instead of coming by land across AZ...maybe the illegals will start crashing boatload fulls into the ports of Seattle, SF, LA, & all points that want them. These sanctuary cities will provide everything they need. Just drop in. The wallet is open. There is no limit. Everything is free. "Give us your poor, your tired, your huddled masses longing to be free..." and all taxpayer funded services are free too! We will provide all.

This is more "feel good" idiocy from the clueless that don't have to deal with reality. Make a proclamation from a self appointed moral pedestal to make yourself look superior, but don't have to deal with the problem. More examples of the loony Left in action. It's their stock and trade since the 1960's.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

Not bloody likely. Do you think you used the word idiot enough in your inane post? Frankly, I don't see how even supporters fail to see obvious problems with profiling with this law, any more than I understand blanket condemnation of it from the perspective of those rabidly against it.

Of course for pointing out the inappropriateness of so many hard heads on the VJ anti-illegal camp earns one the "Leftist/wacko/illegal lover" moniker... Ah well...

The illegals can all flock to the safety of Seattle where all the smart and righteous reside. No profiling or immigration enforcement there. It is open country. Land of the free and home of the brave. Come one come all.

Did I mention Hispanic? Are you calling me a bigot? Kind of jumping to conclusions there. Be nice...not obnoxious because you don't agree.

I support AZ's law and haven't fallen for the silly rhetoric about how it must promote racial profiling. Not being a White liberal, I lack the superpower that allows them to see racism and victimization in the hearts and minds of those who believe immigrants, regardless of color or ethnicity, should be here legally.

I called "them" an idiot. You called "me" a bigot. Big difference. Luckily I'm not the crybaby a lot of folks here on VJ are. Never have been...never will be. I let the chips fly and can defend myself. No harm done. I gotta thick skin. ;)

As white liberal with some conservative views read this and weep those supporting illegal immigrants living here free gratis while hard working legal immigrants try and make a life for themselves.

I think as the list grows the boycott will be of the states with out the strong illegal immigrant laws; what goes around comes around. ( I don't condone the boycotts of our states and any lawmaker that presumes to do so is not listening to his constituents)

Learn Read Educate thy selves fellow democrats on the true cost of not soling the illegal immigrant issue. Do not fling names and rhetoric that makes you look ignorant provide facts of what is happening now and not just media garbage. (media garbage is he said she said or stating what ifs)

good luck with your discussion.

I think this law professor explains pretty well the problems with the law:

Our immigration and citizenship laws define who "we" are as Americans. A century and half ago, this nation fought a bloody civil war. That conflict established not only that all persons truly are created equal, but also that citizenship means national citizenship, and that no single region or state may decide who belongs as an American.

This history explains why immigration law is federal law, and why core provisions of the Arizona statute almost certainly are unconstitutional or will be applied unconstitutionally. No state may superimpose its own immigration enforcement regime if it decides that federal law isn't harsh enough. By trying to do so, Arizona is resorting to self-help even more extreme than the unconstitutional denial of education and other public benefits under California's Proposition 187 in the mid-1990s. In fact, Arizona has gone so far as to allow anyone to sue state and local officials who seem too lax in enforcing federal immigration law.

Supporters of the Arizona law cite "the rule of law" as a justification. The rule of law clearly matters, but this is a very malleable phrase. In judging whether immigration enforcement adheres to the rule of law, it is most important to examine how laws are enforced. From this perspective, it is deeply troubling that Arizona's new law uses a vague "reasonable suspicion" standard.

This standard gives institutional cover for selective immigration enforcement through racial and ethnic profiling, and for this reason it will lead to constitutional violations if the statute goes into effect. Moreover, though the statute targets noncitizens who are in the U.S. unlawfully, it has an impact on U.S. citizens and lawful immigrants who will be caught in the same enforcement net, denying them the rights of other Arizonans to live their lives free from unwarranted suspicion.

Born of fear and anger, Arizona's attempt to enact its own immigration regime and to allow selective enforcement is impulsive extremism. This is yet another sign of the urgent need for Congress and the president to address tough questions of immigration policy and to adopt the durable solutions that can only come from federal legislation.

~ Hiroshi Motomura, the Susan Westerberg Prager Professor of Law at the U.C.L.A. School of Law, is the author of "Americans in Waiting: The Lost Story of Immigration and Citizenship in the United States."
