Well, that requires an actual post that a member must put their name too. Which would likely get reported, causing said post to be deleted and the poster being publicly humiliated.

Much better for people to be able to anonymously give the post a minus. To which other people can also add their minuses.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.

Agreed. If the +1's get to be anonymous, it follows that -1's should be as well. If a poster chooses to say "I gave you a +1/-1" then it should be their choice. Since you only get to vote once on a post, there's low risk that a post will needlessly be voted down (unless multiple sockpuppets are in use).

I gave Johnny's post a +1 -- I'm willing to put my name to that. :)

IMO it's not just the anonymity that works. We have no forum mods; no one on board to patrol (politely) for bad advice. All we have are the so-called forum experts and some of them are way to big for their britches.

The minus is a form of membership moderation. It can help alert readers to incorrect advice. Hopefully it can teach the well-intentioned "wrongsters" to realize when they are wrong. The minus is not rude like someone yelling "your wrong". It's just a minus.

Mmmm, yes. All this too. If we need to work with the brand of moderation supplied on this board, bottom-up information moderation by the members makes sense.

I'm with you on the forum "experts" opinion as well. I think many of us have specific areas that we're more knowledgeable in than others, and if we share that info, great! But I have major doubts about the "qualifications" of the generalists (I have two or three in mind, all insufferable) -- many of them are unable to admit that they're wrong. There needs to be a system for calling BS on VJ in a clinical way, devoid of the usual "your wrong"-ery. Hence, the +1/-1 system.

Edit to remove a stray pronoun.

Respectfully stated, si man: What would then stop people from issuing a -1 as a result of their subjective emotional reaction to "insufferability"? Wouldn't this be contrary to, and defeat the purpose of, a clinical approach?

I believe that presentations of logic, accuracy, and facts will prevail over wrongness, si man.

Remember to stray and, uh, neuter all pronouns, si eunuch.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Is insufferability part of 'the clinical approach'?

My apologies if this was already mentioned -

what if it were brought back, in a limited area, such as the top level forums,

What are your thoughts?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I still think it would be a problem. For instance there is a fairly knowledgeable person in the upper forum that everyone loves to hate, just because he's made some bad choices in the past. I could see his advice getting knocked simply because people dislike him.

And whats so bad about pushing up the good advice? Isn't a 0 among a bunch of 4s the same as a -1 among 3s?

Good god, this IS VJ -- when did logic, accuracy and facts have anything to do with people offering advice? :)

Interesting that people have jumped on my use of "insufferable" (an epithet easily stuck to my own back). I suppose I feel that one's subjective feelings about who is and who is not a tosspot on VJ won't coincide in a statistically significant way with those of other users; generating a critical mass of -1's for no good reason except insufferability is probably unlikely. Some of the people I can't stand are amongst the most feted by others. The majority of VJ users don't give a toss one way or another about who's in or out of favour with the few of us who "care" about such things, and won't vote using standards such as relative insufferability.

And by the way, none of you are on my list. ;)

Edit: removal of a stray "other" in the text. And yes, I am totally abusing my organiser powers to go back in time and correct myself. So there. :P

Not to mention the fact that was is insufferable to one is not to another.
