Good morning.

My British passport is up for renewal and I was just wondering what procedure I have to follow to get that resolved. I guess I will have to visit the British Embassy/Consulate here in L.A. but just want to know if I need to make an appointment or if I can turn up on the day, what information do I need to take with me - old passport, State ID, proof of marriage to an American citizen?

Thanks for your time and I appreciate your help on this matter.

Kind regards,

Paul

You need your old passport and your Green Card. You can leave the marriage certificate and other documents at home. Make sure that you take your invalidated "old" passport home with you, as you'll need it at the N-400 stage to show when you left the US and when you came back.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Are you sure Bob ? It seems to say that the DC office does them all and it's by mail - and no mention of green card.

No personal call ins and it's a 4 week process

Am I reading that wrongly ?

As it is a renewal and not a first time passport you will not need to attend in person.

I have absolutely no idea why Bob suggested you bring your GC as it has nothing to do with the UK.

Read the link that Bernie posted as it is the one I'm using to renew mine as well. If you are married (and changing your name like I am) remember to include a certified copy of your marriage license to have the name on your passport changed.

While we are at it - the UK Washington site says the photos are in millimeters - looks like about 1.7 inches instead of the usual US 2"

It does say Walgreens can do em - anyone any experience of asking walgreens to make em UK size ?
