The whole Thailand Ordeal?

I was trying to find the audiobook, without success, as I have limited time to actually sit down and read a non-technical book. Does anyone know of such a version?

Hmm, sounds plausible.

I tried to access the audiobook unsuccessfully as well.

I have seen a THAI translation of an important chapter online in PDF format.

I don't have a link to it but will try to find it when I have time.

A friend who has been an expat in Thailand since the 1950's

(yes he actually knew Jim Thompson, he is over 80 years old)

said he spoke to a very knowledgeable Thai woman on an airplane

who first told him about "Never Smiles." She said it was 99% true.

The NY public library has a few copies. That's where I got it.

Someone was passing around an article about how the US handled the LA Riots. Have you seen it?

I haven't seen it but I'm not sure the US is a model for crowd control.

I was at a parade in 06 in NYC and almost got crushed to death because of

idiot cops who couldn't see what was right in front of their eyes.

It basically said that they cleaned up the streets with a minimum of casualties and tried to compare it to the current situation in Thailand. I don't have a copy, but a friend of mine told me about it.

In other news, I was pinned down by snipers for over an hour today while I was walking around Petchburi. We holed up in a small soi in that area. RTA stormed in and things were pretty tense for a while.

Be safe my friend.

I googled "Los Angeles Riots Thailand" and stumbled on the following, a blast from the past:

NEWS

Thai King Intervenes to Help End Turmoil : Unrest: Monarch urges both sides to cooperate. Regime offers concessions, but the compromise seems to leave the premier's power intact.

May 21, 1992 | By CHARLES P. WALLACEAfter four days of bloody political unrest, Thailand's revered monarch intervened in the nation's political crisis Wednesday night, prompting the government to release the imprisoned leader of pro-democracy forces, offer conditional amnesty for other protesters and agree to amend the constitution to end the turmoil. Pressure had been building throughout the day on Prime Minister Suchinda Kraprayoon, the target of the anti-government protests, to step aside or face a possible military takeover.

Now that the protestors are being broken up, Khun Thaksin has formally disavowed responsibility for their actions. Didn't he previously call in to their rallies and strongly encouraged (and funded) their actions? Caught with his hand in the cookie jar and all he can say is "I didn't do it!"

Though the gov. has disbanded this group, it seems as though the unrest has yet to be resolved.

The carnage is devastating, not just for the present but for the forseeable future.

The last time I looked at the Bangkok post site they were throwing a figure around

like 120 BILLION TB losses projected in the tourist sector alone.

The notion that such damage can be bought for a few handouts to those who perceive

themselves as disenfranchized is just baffling.

I'm comparing Taksin with the Rockefellers & Kennedys in wealth, not in political or

moral stature, but it's as if an American rich guy told the poor to sack the cities on

the promise of handouts. Assuming they took over successfully, what would they have left?

Do they realize that once they have destroyed everything, the country would be

increasingly become prey to more powerful countries who would want to control it

or neighboring countries that would make attempts at land grabs? Thailand as the

"Land of the Free" would be even more hard pressed to maintain that stature.

It says "We still have the king." "We still have the nation." "We still have our religion." "We still have Thailand."

For those who don't get it: The king, the nation, and the religion are what the colors of the Thai flag stand for.
