If your co-workers are giving you grief about not having an Engagement ring tell them that if they think its so important then THEY can contribute to the cost of one and your fiance will be happy to buy one with THEIR money!

That should shut them up! Or you can tell them your Fiance loves you enough that there's no reason to have to prove it to the world by having a flashy ring on your finger.

If you really want one, how bout just a simple promise type ring. they are relativly cheap, only about 100.00 .

or get a ring from the silverjewelery club... they are really cheap but supposedly really nice ;)

I didn't get my engagement ring till about a year after we were engaged... I really wasn't expecting a ring.... but I did figure out that hubby bought me one, he isn't great with the secrets

We were lucky. We had no money, but my ring was an heirloom in his family....that was an expense we didn't have to worry about. I bought our wedding bands because he left his wallet at home that day!!! Hahaha Ididn't care though. our bands are not that expensive...100-200 bucks each. Had we NOT had the heirloom I would have INSISTED he did NOT buy me an engagement ring now - immigration is super expensive and I know we need the money.

I'd rather have HIM here than have a ring.'

That said, I adore my ring - but more so because of the history behind it - and it's pretty

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!

My engagement ring is a diamond which belonged to my hubby's grandmother, and it was reset for me. I'm really not into that whole "keeping up with the Jones' " BS, so it's perfect for me.

Broma, not everyone likes to have all of their money communally pooled as "ours". I'm like that - by having my own bank account and some money which is mine, I don't have to justify what I spend it on. Likewise, I don't ask my husband to justify every cent he spends from his own account.

In my last relationship, I bought my engagement ring because I was the one with the job, and the money behind me. I had no problem with that, and it didn't make it any less special to me.

(Incidentally, that relationship failed and I have a rather lovely 0.27ct colour F VS1 princess cut diamond set in 18K white gold, if anyone would like to make me an offer. It cost me £400, but I'm VERY flexible....)

Make sure you're wearing clean knickers. You never know when you'll be run over by a bus.

Might sound a bit crazy but.................I saw a ring I liked at an antique jewelry store & since my man wasn't here I put the thing on lay-away. Not how I imagined things but it was an amazing ring & I knew I had to have it.

Funny how priorities change, before I met my love I would sit around with my friends saying that I wanted a huge diamond, I would wear a ribbon around that finger instead of a ring, if it meant I could be with the love of my life. I also know how expensive this process is-our money will be much better spent getting him here-FOR GOOD

Well engagement rings are not “important” as such…being with the one you love is important…but I certainly never complained about the diamond I was given :) And call me shallow but our engagement certainly felt more formal after he got me my ring and I love receiving comments about it…it feels nice that everyone, even strangers can see that I am taken. I really didn’t expect a ring at all and still don’t know how Chris managed to save up for it…I’m a lucky girl.

As for our wedding rings…we’ve both been saving money for the past year and have our money in a joint savings account…we just buy everything for the wedding from that joint account…I like to think he bought mine and I bought his but at the end of the day does it really matter? When you are starting out you just need to get what you can afford…and each pay for what you can.

My brother in law got the engagement ring for his now ex-fiancee from Zales and had to set up a payment plan. He also paid for her to have a #######-job. Also on a payment plan. So now he's still paying for rings and silcon and doesn't have access to either of them!

If you don't have the money I'd say get something that is in your price range. There's nothing wrong with liking the idea of an engagement ring. You could always get a white gold or silver ring and have a 'faux' diamond set in it and then in the future have a real one.

I like my engagement ring a whole big bunch. Because we are going to be in a long distance relationship for a lot of the time (he is military) it's nice to have something that catches the light and looks pretty and reminds you of the person you love. Of course I think about him all the time anyway, but it's nice to carry around your own personal rainbow with you.

I understand people feeling differently though, it's a personal thing.

Hey Britbird, Chris is military too so we'll also be apart a lot :( Sucks...I know what you mean about carrying your fiance around everywhere as a little rainbow on your finger. I love my ring.

In my husband's country, both the guy and the girl get 'engagement rings' which are really wedding bands that they were during the engagement too. So i use my band as my wedding band now. When i got back to the us, I ultimately bought my own engagement ring just because i liked the idea of having one. its not big, but its mine, and officially paid for! (payment plans can be wonderful!)

unfortunately, neither my wedding ring nor my engagement ring fit me at the moment, so im stuck wearing an oversized thumb ring for my wedding ring...... :(

I aint cool enough for a signature.....

I was lucky, my mom gave me her engagement ring with the only condition being that the diamond stays in the family. It was wonderful cause I didn't need to spend a lot of money, I didn't have to worry about making sure I didn't get a blood diamond, and it was a lot more meaningful giving my love what my father gave my mother.

I wasnt inferring that everyone has joint bank accounts hence "our money", we too have separate bank accounts, but I still believe whats mine is his and whats his is mine regardless of where that money is.

As for what I did when we got engaged, I bought the ring in the UK (not an expensive one at that), I brought it to the US and he paid me for me it.

He then took me to a very special location which he had planned, and proposed.

Even though I dont have the huge rock, every time I look at it, I remember the setting in which he gave it to me, and thats enough for me!!

Since in Denmark where my hubby is from it is customary for the guy to wear the wedding band as an engagement ring (and strangely, it's just now being customary there for the woman to get a diamond lol) I went ahead and bought all three rings here. (My engagment and 2 wedding bands). I mailed his ring to him (heavily insured of course) so that he could wear it as was the custom.

He feels bad that I had to go get my own rings, but it doesn't matter ... someday when we have more money we'll get me a bigger diamond ;) And even back then before we were married, it was "our" money. We were functioning back when he was still in Denmark.

If you are comfortable with it, go get it and the hell with what other people say. It's none of their business anyway! Those of us who have had to go thru this hell called immigration know how it really is :)
