I was just wondering if any of you girls had to buy your own rings for the wedding day? My fiance has not bought a ring for me yet but its becoues he is a student and does not have any money what so ever and also becouse his family cut him off from money becouse of me. They don't approve of this marraige. Anyway people at work know i am engaged and have asked me where my ring is. Sometimes i dont know what to say. Is this uncommon for the woman to buy the rings? He hasn't really said anything and i don;t bring it up at all. He has so much other stuff to worry about . Am i just being selfish?

I don't think you're being selfish. This is just a part of almost every girl's dreams. But since you know he's going though a difficult time maybe you can both get wedding rings together when money is not a problem anymore.

He probably thinks about it as much as you do. If you want to bring this up to know what he thinks about it just be careful or he might get embarrassed for not being able to buy you one right now. Maybe you can say something like "Hey, since we're both kinda out of money I thought we could get our wedding rings together sometime when we get a little extra..." or something like that.

There are beautiful rings online that are chaper than usual too... you might wanna take a look!

Don't worry so much about it.... the important thing is that you're together!

Well actually.... I think that talking about it in a nice way (like suggesting to get it together sometime) is better than you both knowing something feels weird and not talking about it at all.

I just wanted to add something..... I'm sorry this is none of my business but...If he's kinda out of money, there are more things to consider. Being married can be pretty expensive... specially when it involves immigration... That could be an issue a lot bigger than who's gonna get the wedding ring.

when you are a couple the money is "our money" regardless of who has more in the bank than who.

so my advise would be go ahead, use your joint money to get a ring, just dont go overboard on the price if money is tight.

Its the love you feel for each other that is important, not the size of the rock on your finger!

Out of curiosity, what are the traditions concerning wedding rings, engagement rings in particular, in the Republic of Georgia? Does you fiance even know about the U.S. custom of engagement rings? Have you talked to him about it? It would be nice to know a little more background so as to know whether it is more a cultural thing rather than a finacial one.

You know, the 'logical' answer is that the diamond indusrty created this tradition of giving diamonds for an engagement. I saw a whole proggie on it once. I think it's all DeBeers' fault!

But the most important aspect of an engagement is the love & commitment that two people give each other. Denali, instead of focusing on the lack of money for a ring, focus on the fact that your fiancee is not only moving country for you, he's going against his family to be with you, the woman he loves. The love and courage that he's displaying far surpasses anything of monetary value. How many women do you know that are THAT lucky to have a man that would walk away from his entire life for the love of his woman? You are BLESSED!

Of course, tradition dictates that a girl 'show off' a ring of sorts...there are some fabulous things they're doing with zirconias lately. Why not look into one of those for the time being?

I kinda agree with you broma25 but not every relationship is that way. Mine is right now but it took us a little while to decide what would work better for us.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that the OP was asking if she should go pick her own wedding ring, which she thought it was a little strange since that's not how it usually goes.

It's all about the way you do things. Getting married is a special time for everyone I would think and getting a ring from the person you love makes it even more special. That's why I didn't tell her to go ahead and get her own ring.

My cousin went through the same situation and we came up with pretty cool ideas to make it special and have fun with it a little if money is a problem. One of the ideas was to go out one day with their "joint" money(the same amount for both of them it doesn't matter who could come up with more) and he chooses her ring, she chooses his and they have to (each one in a different day) come up with a cool idea on how to give it to each other in a special way!

And LisaD, I agree with you too! As I've said before, the important thing is that they're together... and him going against his family to be with her, the woman he loves, is something that no money can buy!

My engagement ring was a $20 silver band from the mall that R. got when we were browsing one day. I bought our bands because I at the time had room on my credit card. It didn't matter to me that I bought the bands

As for the people at work, tell them how expensive immigration is, I'm sure they'll get the hint.

When Bruce and I started talking about a future together, I told him right there and then................I DO NOT want an engagement ring!!!.............I'd rather we'd save and take the money and go on a trip or just enjoy it!! What's an engagement ring other than a 'social thing'? But to each his/her own.

As for our wedding rings..............we will definitely pick them out together. That's the only ring that counts!!!

I would not worry about what 'the people at work' or 'friends' think..................to heck with their 'oh mys' and 'wows'.....................it's only a ring. You don't have to impress anybody other than each other. And 'poopah' to going out and buying yourself a cheaper version. I did not get a ring either. I told him no ring until we have this all done. Us being together is where the money needs to go right now. After we are married and I am working if there is money then I would love one but if not that is okay too.

I don't need a ring. It is weird though when I say I am engaged people look at my finger for a ring.

Wedding bands are a symbol. As for engagement rings, I don't know where or how the tradtion began, but after this thread, I think I may do some research.

Different cultures have different customs and traditions.

We need to remember the reason we are all here; it is because we are building bridges between different cultures and creating new customs.
