Algeria- you can't choose your baby's name?

Hello mena...I don't post much, but I just had to get some input on this. My sister in law in Algeria recently had a baby girl, who she named Alissia. When she went to city hall to register the birth/ add her to the family book, she was told her daughter's name was not on "the list", therefore unacceptable. She was so upset...but was forced to choose a different name for her child. She said she had no idea there was some kind of "list" . My husband was just as surprised. Has anyone ever heard of this? Was this someone looking for a bribe? Is there an actual list of acceptable and unacceptable baby names in Algeria?

Rosie :bonk:

Her husband did argue. I guess it didn't work.

I've asked around today about this "list" and one person told me this "I know for sure there is one in Morocco...this is news about Algeria...Berbers there have alot of problems because their names are often forbidden"

That doesn't make any sense at all! It should be ONLY the parents choice!!!

I agree totally! There are no limitations on names in Tunis though we're going to have to make sure Sayed's name is written in Arabic as Sa3id/Saiid and not Sayyid, but other than that no restrictions or worries. I wonder why Algeria and other countries have that rule?

I've been confused whether you pronounce his name as Saiid/Saeed or Sayyid. Sayid/Saiid is prettier :) Such a happy name ;)

His name is pronounced sa3id /saeed (happy) and not Sayyid (master/lord) but we were afraid that with that spelling he's face a lot of hard times in the US, so we tried to spell it as close as we could to how it should be said "Sayed" I know that sounds weird, but we were trying to think of him growing up here, school, etc. So far with the spelling Sayed everyone has gotten in right from the first go. I was surprised at doc visits and such when they called his name it was totally correct. On Tunisian documents it won't matter as it will be written in arabic

OMG, I know that women had no clue what chlamydia was. LOL. When I worked in the ER, you would'nt believe the names we saw. One I remember sounded out "Padge-a-ma" but it was spelled Pajama. One had named her baby "Shithed" pronounced shith-ed.
