Australia has been a bastion of fiscal responsibility. In fact in a recent study of fiscal responsibility, Australia was found to be the most fiscally responsible country south of the Mason-Dixon line.

you forgot to include a bar graph or pie chart or some sort of visual aid

from the article:

The difference is, of course, that the United States has a federal system, while the euro zone does not. In America, Texas automatically bails out Michigan via the redistribution of income and corporation tax receipts. What the Greek crisis has belatedly revealed is that such fiscal centralization is the necessary corollary of a monetary union.

Europe now faces a much bigger decision than whether to bail out Greece. The real choice is between becoming a fully fledged United States of Europe, or remaining little more than a modern-day Holy Roman Empire, a gimcrack hodgepodge of "variable geometry" that will sooner or later fall apart.

no way europe will ever be united states of anything. if texas bails out michigan, no big deal, we are all americans, but no way germans are going to bail out lazy greeks forever.

interesting article. it would be amazing to see the euro go below a dollar. our exports would suffer, but would be nice to get a few trips to europe in while the euro is low.

Life..... Nobody gets out alive.

Take your profits from American stock companies now.

This trend will likely continue; interest rates have only

one way to go and that's up. Rates up, markets down.

Buy gold.

When everyone and their thong tells you to "buy gold", don't. Own *some* gold (no more

than 10-15% of your portfolio), or be short gold. Buy European stocks, they are seriously

undervalued right now.

But he said because most of the products China exports to the United States are labor-intensive goods U.S. manufacturers stopped making years ago, the U.S. would only have two choices: buy the products from other countries or from the Chinese.

Or, start manufacturing the labor-intensive goods in the US. When labor becomes too expensive, then manufacturers turn to automation. Manufacturing technology is suffering because of cheap labor in the third world, and China. Once it become economically feasible to replace 400 Chinese with one machine, then it will happen.

Nope. The Chinese keeping the price of their goods low is only helping Walmart, and the Central Committee Members of the Chinese Communist Party. Mexico, the Philippines, and host of other countries would quickly assume China's place without raising the price significantly. No worries there.

If we produce nothing but "services" what is the value of the dollar based on?

If the Chinese & others (Mexico, Philippines, etc) stop accepting worthless greenbacks

and we have to start producing our own, that will be because their own consumption

will be able to sustain their own production, something they have been holding back

on so far. If keeping Walmart in business is consistent with their goals they will continue

to do that. If they are not getting the return they want from that they will refuse dollars

and start buying things of REAL value in the US instead. Then WE won't be able to afford

anything sold here or by China.
