Hello everyone, my husband has been with me here in the US since March 24 (almost 2 months) he has yet to receive his social security card, in fact he has not received anything since he has been here. Im just wondering what are next step should be or is this normal to take this long for his social security card? And does anyone know about adjustment of status and what this means? We will be married for 2 years in October of this year. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Jeni~

My husband got here on the 18th of April and just this past Monday he got the letter of Welcome to America from the USCIS.

Perhaps call them and see if they had received his paperwork from his POE. From what I read that is usually is what takes time. I hope you hear something soon.

What status did he enter the country with? If he entered as a permanent resident there is no AOS. However, if he is issued a conditional I-551 card, then he will need to apply for removal of the conditions on his permanent resident status. That should be filed within 80 days of the I-551 card expiring.

Now as far as the SSN card, if he checked off in the DS-230 that he wanted to be assigned an SSN and was issued an immigrant visa, he should have went into an SSA office after three weeks.

When he goes into am SSA office, have him take his passport with the machine readable immigrant visa and I-551 stamp or I-551 card and passport. If his birth certificate is handy take that too.

You will need to get him to the Social Security office to fill out an application. I would just add to take a copy of your marraige certificate with you to the SS office, along with the passport, visa, and the card. We needed that at some point, but I can't remember why.

I'm really glad I came across this thread. I thought that if we ticked the box that my husband wanted a SS card issued that it would be taken care of automatically and sent to our address in the States. My husband has already received his green card in the mail, but not the SS card. So we have to go to the SSA in Indiana? Is that right?

I made a similar thread a few weeks ago about the same thing.

I also assumed that I would get my SSN automatically because I checked the box on the DS230.

The 'welcome to America' PDF that I was told to download also stated that I would not need to do anything if I marked this box.

I didn't receive it, so went to my local SSA office. I filled out the form, (you can download and print it from their website to save time), then took it, along with my passport, birth certificate, green card and marriage certificate.

I was there around 90 minutes in total, including the waiting.

They took my info, input it into the computer, gave me a letter to say I applied and told me to expect it within 4-6 weeks.... I received it a week later and it had been issued on the same day I went to the office.

I would advise him to go to your local Social Security office if he hasn't received it yet, just to get things moving :)

Good luck .

The SS office told us that they could see in their system if a card was ordered. At least you could find out if it was in process. They can also do that by phone or email start looking here SS Admin immigrants there is some contact info. somewhere. They will call or email you pretty quickly.

The SSA can do is tell if the SSN has been assigned since an SSN record will have been established and sometimes the application partially processes, so there will be a pending SSN application. Otherwise, SSA offices don't have a clue as to what happened to your DS-230 request.

I was talking about tracking an application that was filled out in a SS office. They told us each time we inquired where it was and why. Still frustrated because the card was late, and we seemed to discover new rules as we went, but in our case (K-1 with EAD) they could let us know what was going on, if I recall.

My husband and I also checked yes on the DS-230 application; now I'm kinda wishing we hadn't! I thought I had read on here it was better to check yes, but now I'm seeing different information.

Anyway, how long should we wait to go into the SSA office. Should we wait 3 weeks and THEN go or can we go to the SSA office to apply for the card a couple days after he arrives (even if we checked yes on the DS-230)?

Thanks!

I marked no on my DS230 and we went directly to the SSA to update my SS card. They told us to come 2 weeks after POE. We made the application for a new updated one last Friday and the lady said it should be in the mail in a week or two.

If you have a file number, A number, application reference, or a SSN, just email them. I posted a link above. They respond pretty well to email. Why go stand in a line if you don't know it will help? We did it too, just saying. Good luck.
