The New Zealander was questioned about the accent on Radio 4 by the interviewer Mark Lawson.

Crowe, 46, to suggestions that there were hints of Irish in his portrayal of the Nottingham legend in the movie which was released on Wednesday.

Russell Crowe launches Robin Hood The star of Gladiator said: "You've got dead ears, mate – seriously dead ears if you think there's an Irish accent.

Lawson, the arts critic, then asked Crowe if the accent was meant to be northern.

Crowe replied: "No I was going for an Italian ... missed it? F--- me."

The Beautiful Mind actor then walked out of the interview for Front Row after Lawson asked whether it was true that he wanted to say the famous line in Gladiator: "I'll take my revenge in this life or the next."

Crowe can then be heard muttering, "I don't get the Irish thing by the way. I don't get it at all."

The actor has been criticised for the accent he has given Robin Hood in the film of the same name.

Crowe has reportedly claimed in some interviews that he was seeking a Yorkshire accent because several academics believe the outlaw was from there, and not Nottingham.

Holy crow!

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

The accent didn't bother me when I saw the movie.

But yeah - Crowe is a bit of a prima.

The only time a film accent bothered me was with that $hit Alexander the Great movie - where everyone sounded Irish, even the actors who weren't Irish.

Actually Prince of Thieves was a bad rip-off of an old TV series called Robin of Sherwood. Alan Rickman even "borrowed" Nickolas Grace's performance as Sheriff of Nottingham.

Didn't he bust a hotel telephone because of his hot temper? I'd like to see him and Mel Gibson locked in a cell together with a bottle of gin.

I think he threw the phone and accidentally hit a guy in the head (though it might have been deliberate). There were a couple of other punch-ups he was involved in as I recall.

Who'd you pick to win between Crowe and Gibson?
