(NewsCore) - A one-off blast of ultrasound could work as a reversible contraceptive for men, according to scientists, The Times of London reported Thursday.

If preliminary results are confirmed, applying therapeutic ultrasound to the testes for 10 to 15 minutes could provide protection for up to six months.

James Tsuruta, of the University of North Carolina, who led the research, said: “We think this could provide men with reliable, low-cost, non-hormonal contraception from a single round of treatment.”

Dr Tsuruta and colleagues have already proved the technique in rats, and plan to extend trials to humans as early as next year.

Their findings so far suggest that sperm production can be halted temporarily without causing a longer-term reduction in fertility.

Once sperm production resumed after six months there was no evidence of complications, such as sperm being of lower genetic quality.

Good. There's also some kind of gel thing out for men - I didn't catch the news properly but I know they are working on these things.

When it comes to birth control, it might soon be the guy's turn. Researchers have developed a birth control gel for men. CBS 2's Vince Gerasole explains how a little rub on the elbow could do the trick.

For 50 years now, "the pill" has liberated American women when it comes to their reproductive lives. But with liberation has come another female burden to bear.

"It's something we always have to be responsible for and worry about," one young woman told CBS 2 News.

On the other hand, as one man said, "Men don't really discuss the pill. You know, it's more about sex."

Asked what she would make of it if there was something available, where a man would be responsible on his own for birth control, another woman said, "I don't know if I'd necessarily trust that."

The subject wasn't condoms. California researchers are actually testing out a topical testosterone gel that could temporarily annihilate a man's sperm count.

Another woman who spoke to CBS 2 News said, "If a woman can do something with her body a man should be able to do the same thing."

CBS 2 News visited a male fertility expert Wednesday. Dr. Laurence Levine at Rush University Medical Center said he sees one or two dozen patients each week, who are taking testosterone gel.

For decades, testosterone gels have been prescribed for men of all ages whose bodies are slowing down, but after several months something happens to their sperm count.

"We find that often times that when they take that testosterone they will have suppression or reduction of their sperm production. So it can compromise fertility status," Levine said.

Researchers believe that, in the right dose, testosterone, perhaps enhanced with female horomones, might be the perfect male contraceptive

The gel is applied by rubbing a bit on your elbow and stomach.

"It's kind of safer, just in case … she misses her birth control," one man said.

It certainly adds a new rub to the birth control debate, if men have the conversation at all.

"I won't go out to my buddies and say 'Hey, let's talk about birth control,' you know? Because it's not normally something you talk about," another man said.

So would men would step up to the plate and take responsibility for birth control? "Maybe some men; but not most, no," one man told CBS 2 News.

The male birth control gel is only going into clinical trials at this point and wouldn't be available to the general public for at least seven years. That just might be long enough for men to get used to the idea.

Somehow this just reminds me of Nazi Carl Clauberg's experiments .

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.
