HOA Forcloses On Home For Not Paying Fees Eventhough The House Was Fully Paid For.

Mueller's husband died in 2005. She used the insurance money from his death to purchase their $150,000 home outright.

Being unemployed, she sold her jewelry to help pay bills, but let her $300 annual HOA dues go unpaid for four years.

...

The attorney for the Mistletoe Hills HOA told News 8 he's happy Mueller is getting the help she needs to get her home back. He also said he hopes she will be able to pay her HOA fees in the future so something like this never happens again.

Sorry to go back to the topic, but, at the risk of sounding completely insensitive, she could (gasp) get a job. It's been 5 years.

HOA's are probably one of the silliest things around. While I understand their initial purpose, they have gone way beyond that. Having to seek permission to even add a storm door ####### is that?

It's interesting they are permitted do this in Texas Paul. Since the last recession in AUS (88 crash), government regulations states that a home cannot be sold to repay any debt for less than it's worth. What the means is that they would have to sell the house for the going rate in the community, take the proceeds they are owned, and then give the rest of the money back to the person. Under no circumstances can you reposes a home and sell it for only what you are owed.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Well, a lot of people don't like the fact that most sidewalks are on people's front lawn pretty much. Usually there's a split in the lawn where the sidewalk is.

I think people would be more 'accepting' if most sidewalks were right next to the street versus taking up a couple of feet/making a gap on their lawn.

These are the best types of sidewalks as they add character to your street, which translates to value. Up here we don't even had sidewalks on so many streets, which is utterly ridiculous. Thanks repubs of the state.

Sidewalks generally are a city/county/community issue.

our house fall on the side of the street that is covered by the HOA, even though we do not share any common property with the neighbors, We have to do the front lawn, and everything that comes with the house, the houses that are facining the back end have private street, but sometimes you have no options, you can find a house you like it's suck but you have no choice, the only factor was our HOA was only $50, but what do we benefit from $50/Month i don't know.

That's actually cheap. Our HOA is about $150 per month.

Every day the President of a Homeowners Association, randomly selected, should be drawn and quartered by garden tractors. Then this BS will stop.

Another thing would be if the SHEEP would start to walk away from ANY property that had an HOA. In a buyer's market like we have now, it wouldn't take much and they would go the way of the video cassette "clubs".

HOAs are quite prevalant nowadays and I'm not about to walk away from a good house in a good neighborhood for a good price over a $100/year fee. If doing so makes you sleep better at night, more power to you.

I wouldn't walk away because of a fee, I would walk away because I am not going to live where an "association" can tell what to do on my own property. Even if they offer to dictate to me for FREE, I am not interested. If a homeowners association is dictating rules to me, in negates the possiblity of it being a "good house".

We just need to make them a whole lot less prevelent and absent random horrific torture until death of HOA board members, walking away from properties would do the trick.

We don't ALL have to walk away, just enough to make the concept unpalatable.

I understand the premise of a HOA here if they are to limit noise violations, the upkeep of property and require feedback on large scale modifications (like painting your house exterior purple) but the nitpicking is ridiculous. Like a letter because a lamp was out for three days #######. The aforementioned are carried out on a county level in my county back in AUS anyway, so there is no need for a HOA.

Anyway, who purchases a house to have a committee of dh's tell you what you can or cannot do with the house you own or pay a mortgage on?

I certainly wouldn't purchase a house under a HOA that I wasn't comfortable with, and I have passed on houses after reading the HOA rulebook in the past. HOAs can be a good thing if they keep the neighborhood nice and take care of upkeep in commonly owned outlots, etc. For our HOA, that appears to be the case.
