You're certainly entitled to your opinion. Thanks for sharing.

they also contribute to higher utility bills. open the door in the summer, you just let in a bunch of hot air. open the door in the winter, you just let in a bunch of cold air. detached garages produce lower utility bills.

have fun walking to your car through the rain & snow

:secret: that's what a wife and snow shovel is for. :hehe:

Right.

Another home design thing currently in vogue that I am also a big fan of but also comes with higher energy bills is the open floor plan.

Yeah. And smaller lots cost less and are taxed less. In the end, we all have to find the right balance between what we want and what we can pay. I don't think the attached garage is going away anytime soon, precisely for the reasons justashooter alluded to - the attached garage today is used as much more than just a place to park your car.

I don't know about that. If garages were detached, people would still need additional space in their homes to do what they currently use the garage for.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with shooter regarding his obvious displeasure with garages being used as storage space. I don't personally like that either, but we're lucky enough to have a lot of storage space in the unfinished portion of our basement along with an attic (though I have not ventured up there yet). However, if you don't have a lot of extra place to store things, it is certainly understandable that one would use extra space in their attached garage as opposed to stacking things up in the middle of the living room.

garages are supposed to be separate from your house. they are a place to keep your car and to work on it, not a place to keep your christmas decorations or your left-over board games or your spare freezer.

i have 6 buildings on my place. the garage is 100 feet from the house, where it belongs.

According to whom?? Personally, I like having direct access from my garage to my house, so I don't have to hike home after parking while carrying packages in the rain. Also helps keep my purchases private. And not all homes are equipped with a basement or attic for storage. Garages are "supposed to be" wherever the homeowner happens to want them.

I think you have a totally appropriate response to the problem. It's Paul that I can't fathom. Normally, something like not paying your dues would necessarily demand some draconian action in order to 'show' the culprit how irresponsible their actions are - but yet when it's an HOA taking the draconian action, Paul goes all girly about it.

If they don't pay their dues once, take away their house. If they do it again, execute them! (Especially if they are illegal immigrants.)

Ideally the garage should face a rear alley and not be such a "celebrated" element as they are in most residential developments.

Sidewalks are public domain, but I admit communities should technically maintain them not homeowners. (Unless homeowners have voted to maintain them...that's not particularly fair.
