HOA Forcloses On Home For Not Paying Fees Eventhough The House Was Fully Paid For.

The increasing ubiquity of HOAs is part of this. If my wife and I had a child and if we wanted to buy a home that didn't cost an arm and a leg, is in an actual neighborhood (i.e. new urbanist style) with younger families, good schools and near amenities like train stations, we'd be hard pressed to find that around here outside of an HOA. Most non-HOA communities here tend to be older communities, in the boonies, run-down or extremely pricey.

My findings exactly. Plus, it keeps your neighbors from parking their partridge-style RV on their front lawn.

 yes.

Actually, even IN the boonies HOAs are quite prevalent. When we were looking for houses specifically out in the country, I rarely found houses that weren't part of a HOA. When I did, they were, as you mentioned, old houses in old neighborhoods. All of the new developments had HOAs. Some HOAs were more restrictive than others - some were too restrictive for my tastes. The one we settled on was pretty reasonable based on the regs list, and only $100/year which includes upkeep of the outlots & common areas of the subdivision. $300 seems a bit steep to me.

so leave your $hithole state and move to pennsylvania, but be sure to leave your urban personality behind when you come. there are plenty of cracker box developments with all the cool stuff like garages and sidewalks and new schools being built within a few miles of me, and man are they driving my taxes up.

Do you really expect a reasonable answer from this guy, or are you just interested in some comedic relief from the looniest member of VJ?

I've heard the anger about sidewalks and taxes before. But the garage thing is new to me, and I'd love to learn more

Sidewalks make people mad? There are some crazy folks out and about ;)

Yes, they do. Welcome to the United States.

Not just sidewalks, either. Many years ago, my supervisor at a work-study job in college, told me that in "real America", there were no paved parking lots, people parked their cars on the dirt and on gravel. I was only 18 but at that moment, it dawned on me. I worked for a freak.

Well, a lot of people don't like the fact that most sidewalks are on people's front lawn pretty much. Usually there's a split in the lawn where the sidewalk is.

I think people would be more 'accepting' if most sidewalks were right next to the street versus taking up a couple of feet/making a gap on their lawn.

another complaint about that is the property between the sidewalk and the road usually belongs to the city, but the homeowner is expected to maintain it - for free. and if they don't, the city usually fines them.

garages are supposed to be separate from your house. they are a place to keep your car and to work on it, not a place to keep your christmas decorations or your left-over board games or your spare freezer.

attached garages were invented by a developer who was trying to get the most lots possible on an old corn field he had development rights to. he figured that attaching the garage to the house would make the postage stamp lot seem roomier, and also allow him to minimise the lot size while maintaining building set-backs required by zoning ordinance.

i have 6 buildings on my place. the garage is 100 feet from the house, where it belongs.
