USC - What English Word does your SO mispronounce most often?

Same here, along with several others! We get in arguments all the time on who is correct. I always say that the English may have made up the language, but Americans perfected it!

lol... we get into play arguments all the time about the same thing. aluminum vs aluminium comes up all the time. color vs colour. armor vs armour. favorite vs favourite. (those aren't all mispronunciations, but still!)

I tell him that his lot will throw a U into a word whenever they can

bin. trash can. bin. trash can. bin for the win! trash can! lmao.... he says 'what's that thing on your desktop you put your trash in?' *renames recycle bin to trash can* 'TRASH CAN!' *facepalm*

he says yog-gurt. I say yo-gurt.

he says tomahto. I say tomayto.

I just tell him I don't speak english. I speak american. hahahaha... that one drives him nuts

Many of the language errors our offshore spouses make are not only pronunciation errors.

Very often she will say a perfectly pronounced English word that in Thai is a perfectly valid idiom given the context,

but when she translates it into English it's often way out of line, sometimes an insult and sometimes sexy.

When I think of an example I'll share it.

That's when the USC has to use an extra measure of understanding,

because what comes out of her mouth sounds like total nonsense.

What must I sound like when trying to speak Thai?

I went to pick her up last night at the supermarket deli where she works

....and I was a little early, about 10 minutes.

She said, "get me Heinikin"

I said "do you really want beer?"

It turns out she really wanted me to get Pistachio Hagen-Daz ice cream

I still hear her saying "jew-ice" instead of "joose" for "juice."

That's because the way it's spelled, "jew-ice" makes more sense.

Another one at the top of the mispronouncement list is "argument."

She wants to tell me about people who had a row at work and the way

she says it, it sounds like "agreement."

It's funny because she says they had an "agreement in a loud voice."

This morning on the way to her workplace, I had Jimi Hendrix on the CD player in the car.

I am the alien spouse and I am sure I don't pronounce every word correctly but my USC husband says "ga-ra-dge" instead of "ga-rah-ge" (garage) and it makes me chuckle every time I hear him say it.

You might be more used to a British pronunciation, "gá-radge" or "gá-ridge"

but my colonial pronunciation is much the same as your husband's,

which I would interpret as "ga-ráh-dj" (emphasis on the syllable

indicated by the accent mark).

{Still confused as to whether a "boot" is storage or footwear.}

i never really noticed it but my husband is challenged by words that begin with "v" he has a student named violet and he calls her wiolet (it's really cute). we have a volkswagen which is pretty funny too.

Just a bit of trivia for those that may not have known before but aluminium is actually the original spelling and pronunciation of the word. At some point we "Americanized" it and dropped the "i" just making it aluminum. If you take a look at the other elements, aluminum is the only one that we have modified while plenty of other elements have the "ium" ending...Lithium, Sodium, Magnesium, Potassium, Calcium, just to name a few.
