USC - What English Word does your SO mispronounce most often?

She was describing some crotchety customers at the supermarket deli where she works

and used adjectives such as "cyclic" and "psycologic" but what she meant was PSYCHOTIC.

Lots of folks just go there to complain and don''t buy anything;

I saw one last night arguing with the cashier as he exited empty-handed.

There are some old ladies that shout at her to clean the slicing machine

and then order 1/4 lb. of the cheapest cut.

She says that some people just go there to insult the staff. She said if

customers behaved that way in Thailand the deli person would throw

food at the customer's face. Naturally she adheres to the policy that

"the customer is always right" and because of her kind nature she

doesn't explode & throw a fit like her boss and co-workers sometimes do.

She said they just go into a corner and throw a fit, but not at the customer.:whistle:

Another word she uses in these situations: "They treat me like slav" (...slave)

Hmm, today I was making gumbo while Rin washed dishes. The conversation went something like:

Rin: You get "oy cha"?

Me: I never put oysters in my gumbo.

Rin: What?

Me: I don't like oysters in my gumbo.

Rin: I know. Why did you say that?

Me: Because you asked.

Rin: (laughing) No, you said you were going to take car today for oy cha (oil change)!

But it goes both ways. I have tried learning a little Thai, but she is the only Thai that understands me. Recently started using aow ____ mai to ask her if she wants something. i.e. aow beer mai? to ask if she wants a beer.

So, we were out at the store today and I offered her some of my Dentyne. "Aow gum mai?". She looked at me shocked and told me to never say that to any Thais (she heard "aow gun mai?") Basically, I crudely asked her if she wanted to have sex!

 i could totally "hear" that oy cha! as for learning thai it's a challenge no? it's a tonal language as is my native language so i hear all the time..."why your thai sound like chinese?" "uh because i'm chinese and my thai stinks" he does love telling other thai people when we meet that i speak thai, to which i say "put thai may dai" and he says "LIAR" i think just he can understand me because he gets the general idea of what i am trying to say. it's not fair he's picking up more chinese than i am thai though. he ear hustles when i speak to my family and isn't bad.

I also think it has something to do with the structuring of spoken Thai.

Thais often use one word statements which are self-explanitory to them

(also conforming to the "tonal" characteristics of the language) but when

translated into English you need to have at least an intelligible phrase.

That's why when my wife speaks English to me it sometimes sounds

shortened or abbreviated which in English makes it ambiguous.

I always find myself saying, "put that in a sentence, darling."

That's just a theory of mine - does it make sense to anyone else?

Not long after my mister arrived, about 3 months into English class, he used to pronounce "apostrophe" as prostitute.

He was doing his homework aloud at the table one day, and all i heard was "Prostitute -s, prostitute -s."

i said, "What are you doing?"

He said, "When you want to show possession in English, you have to make prostitute -s."
