And indeed, the Russian word for "catastrophe" is "катастрофа," pronounced ka-ta-strOf-uh. So PJ's wife is really just using the Russian pronunciation but leaving off the last syllable since it clearly isn't there. And likely Russian took this word from French.

 agreed

There was a time in Russian history when they couldn't get enough of anything French - language, culture & food.

I forget which Czar it was under but I supposed it was a little like the Japanese craze for anything Disney...

DH corrects me whenever I pronounce something the British English way (like can't, class, etc), but that's they way I learned it and it's hard to break a habit. In the beginning I didn't get the difference between w and v. In German they are both pronounced the same. Took a while to understand what he meant, now I can pronounce it correctly. Words I have troubles with here and there are of Latin origin we use in German too, cause I just want to pronounce it German.

It started under Peter I (the Great) who wanted to Europeanize Russia and its nobility. It was continued to greater and lesser extents by all his successors up until the revolution. French influence increased immediately after Napoleon's invasion due to the great number of deserters from the Grande Army that Napoleon left behind.

I'm not sure if he's teasing me (I'm sure he is whenever he does it NOW), but he will frequently say Verizon incorrectly (He works for them now!) by saying Ver-is-on with an i sound like in "is" instead of Ver-I-zon (rhymes with Horizon)

My English OH tried to tell me about the little "bazzle" plant that he had in his kitchen. I told him I didn't know what kind of plant that was and that maybe we don't have those in America.

He was talking about basil.

Speaking of herbs, Nik is very stubborn about his side of the Corriander/Cilantro debate.

My German husband has a hell of a time with the word "weathervane". ;)

Poor thing.

I thought coriander was the dry version of cilantro. No?

Ah yes, we've had that one as well. I let it go simply because I despise it regardless of what it's called. Can make for an interesting grocery shopping trip though. :P

Well, the only coriander I know of is in seed form. I'm not sure if what we call coriander seeds is the same thing at all...Maybe I should try planting some...

Oh, and when I lived in Manhattan, I saw a sign outside a Korean Deli on 2nd Ave that said "Dapodits $1.00"

Yes, daffodils :D

I once met a Japanese man at a party and he asked me my name, "Alison" I replied.

He answered, "But isn't that a man's name?"

Me, "No, it's a woman's name."

Him, "No, it's a man's name, Harrison, Harrison Ford." :P
