Dear all,

This summer I got a trip plannend to see my girlfriend/fiance. We havent started the K1 Proces yet.

The trip will be from July 1st untill Augst 31st, its during my schoolbreak.

I would like some advice on what to tell at the POE in Chicago.

I was a exchange student who played (American) Football for a year in Kansas. Should I tell the POE officers that

I am visitingen my friends (what I am ofcourse going to do) or should I say that I am visiting my girlfriend.

I really dont have any intention to stay because I have to finish my senior year after this summer.

Please give me advice, I am so nervous for the POE :(

Is the trip too long? Is it suspicous? Tell me!

Thank you!

Former exchange student

Played football

Returning for a few summer months to visit friends AND girlfriend

I dont see anything that sounds suspicous

In fact it sounds completely and perfectly normal to me

So your from Holland right? Not a high fraud country.

It doesn't sound like you should have any problem. May want to check into what documents you can gather that show strong ties to you home country just to be on the safe side.

Wish you the best and hope you have a great visit. Assuming all goes well - good luck with you K-1 journey when you ready to start that too!

Just say you are visiting some friends to avoid more questions.

When I go to the USA, I always say I am visiting friends- which is true, because my boyfriend is my

best friend....=) and plus, it's a way to avoid more questions...

Im planning to say that im going to visit friends that I made while I was in the US for and that I want to spend my summerbreak here. Will this work?

But I have send packages and letters towards my girl, do they make a record of this?

Just say you are visiting some friends to avoid more questions.

My fiance and I went through this just a month ago. It was stressful to say the least. We however found that it depends upon the POE. He has been through Chicago now and Atlanta. Chicago gave him a hard time, while Atlanta asked him two questions and then told him to enjoy his vacation. Researching this myself, I found that most say that to be honest is the best policy. Also, for the most part you shouldn't have any trouble. It seems to be the odd case that gets hung up entering the country for a visit. So best advice .....honesty and hope you get a entry agent that doesn't have a corn cob up his backside. Good Luck and hope you enjoy your visit!

P.S. Less is more. Don't volunteer any extra information. Answer their questions simply and honestly.

Thanks for the responds.

I will be entering in Chicago. Could you tell me in what way they gave him a hard time? What did he tell them?

Where you guys already in the K1 process?

No we hadn't started the K1 process. We hadn't even decided to get married at that point. He entered in Chicago Dec 1 2009. The agent wasn't happy with how long my fellow was staying, about 85 days. For some reason he thought it a bit too long to visit. Either that or he was simply being a ####. Just make sure you have your proof of applying for the K1 with you....and make sure that you have proof of your income(or that of your S.O.) that will support you while visiting the U.S. The second time around I made sure I had sent a couple of paycheck stubs, a bank statement showing deposits (marking out account numbers and such) and a signed notarized letter in a sealed envelope that showed the postal stamps and dates. That way if they had said anything to my S.O. and took him to secondary, he could show that he is indeed being on the up and up and intend to follow the laws of immigration for the US. But like I said the second time he came through Atlanta and as the south is wont to do....the used good sense and welcomed my fellow and told him to have a great visit. Again good luck with yours.

Make sure you have a copy of your itinerary with your return date. You might also wish to have with you proof of reasons you may need to return. Rental agreements, school schedules, Dr.'s appointment things of this nature. Believe me.....while he was in Atlanta I was holding my breath hoping nothing went wrong. But as most of what I have read...,.he just sailed right on in with no issue.

To each his own.....but....I have read that honesty is the best when dealing with theses folks at immigration and POE and such. My SO told them point blank he was here to visit his fiance. So what you do on that issue is totally up to you. Me...well I would be straight up but again I would have that back up information about your timely return to your own country.

This was something I worried about when I was making visits to my now fiance, then boyfriend. There is no need to worry, in my experience. Bring the proof that you mentioned of return ticket and letter from your school. I usually said I was visiting friends, but after several visits the agent asked if it was a special friend. We had a laugh about that, but as long as you are genuinely making a visit under 90 days you should be fine.

I would just answer questions honestly as other people suggested too. If they ask what is the scope of your visit, just say vacation. For how long? 2 months. Who are you staying with? Friends I made while I was in Kansas as a student, etc. If the girlfriend topic comes up, there is nothing wrong with having a girlfriend in the US. If they ask you "are you planning on getting married and stay permamently", say no, because after all you will propose THEN go home and apply for a k1. Honesty is key, but unnecessary info on the other hand may sound odd.

Obviously if people say " I'm here as a tourist" then they get married and file for AOS, well, that's another story, but I think they keep record of what you say at POE only if you are taken to a separate room (I think that's what my lawyer said when I applied for k1). So you'll be ok! You'll be surprised to see many IO don't even ask questions- it happened to me in NYC last spring. Not even "Hello"!
