Perhaps it reflects the difference from the smaller community I was living in before moving to NJ. Certainly the cost of living here is much higher than where I was but perhaps not as different from say Toronto. I also find I am bombarded with coupons and offers galore making it so much easier to be tempted. But again maybe that's a NJ thing :)

As far as saving goes I have had the opposite experience from you. Spending and debt seems to be a normal way of living here, where as I grew up saving and investing from the time I had a job.

Oh man the coupon thing here is so amazing to me. I do find that a lot different here. Growing up my Mom always told me that coupons were just a way of making you buy things you didn't need, so I think that is true. I never use a coupon unless it for something I was going to buy anyways. My in-laws are like that too though and they are American. We are friends with another couple who is like obsessed with coupons.

I think save/spend depends on the person and how they were raised, not what country they're from. I think there are probably regional differences for sure, small town vs. big city etc., but the country is a moot point if you ask me.

I see both points you made more here in the US, than I did in Canada.

Absolutely!

As far as coupons go I also only use them for things I would be buying anyway but I find I am getting a lot more here than I did In Canada. I get coupons in the newspaper, in the mail, printed out on the grocery receipt...it's never ending.

i believe TFSA is the Canadian answer to US Roth IRA, not the other way around. It was introduced only in 2008 but Roth IRA was established long time back in 1997 in US. You can open Roth IRA in any US bank and just do CDs or open with a broker and trade stocks. I don't understand the point you guys are discussing here?
