In your experience (not in NVC/USCIS "estimates :P ) how long does it take an application/case to get to a consulate after the NVC assigns a case number? We haven't received anything in the mail from the NVC yet. I mean, how long did it take for your application to get from the NVC to the consolate? Portsmouth NH is only about 8 hours from the Montreal, Quebec consulate. Don't know if that makes a difference :innocent: !

Come on guys, cheer me up, please! Tell me something good!

In about two and a half months and three months from the time NVC assigns a case number. Your DS 3032 (Choice of agent) and AOS (Affidavit of Support) Fee Bill will be generated in about 1-2 weeks after NVC assigns a case number. Please do a lots of reading at the NVC forum, the NVC time savers, NVC Flow Chart, etc. Good Luck.

I-130 Timeline with USCIS:

It took 92 days for I-130 to get approved from the filing date

NVC Process of I-130:

It took 78 days to complete the NVC process

Interview Process at The U.S. Embassy

Interview took 223 days from the I-130 filing date. Immigrant Visa was issued right after the interview

We have a case number. It was assigned last week.

Our NOA2 was on July 20, I think.

I'll go read at the NVC forum - didn't know there was one!

Is there an NBC forum as well (for the I129F/K3 stuff)?

This is all so confusing.

"When an applicant's priority date is close to becoming current , NVC will send an Affidavit of Support (I-864 form) processing fee bill to the petitioner and an Agent of Choice and Address (DS-3032) form to the applicant. Once the I-864 processing fee is paid, NVC will send the I-864 forms and instructions to the petitioner. Once NVC receives the form DS-3032 from the applicant, NVC will mail the Immigrant Visa (IV) fee bill to the agent of choice. Once the IV fee bill is paid, NVC will send the Instruction Packet of forms and information to the agent. "

Okay, my application is at the NVC, has a case number, and is current (as it is an I130 for a spouse), so I will be getting the I864 processing fee bill AND an Agent of Choice and Adress (DS-3032) form?

So I won't get the I-864 form, just the processing bill - then they will send the I-864 forms later, after I have paid?

Aren't I both the applicant and the petitioner? Because I thought my foreign spouse was the beneficiary, not an applicant or petitioner. Augh! What is the fee for the I-864?

What is this "Agent of Choice" thing and how does it work?

SO we send it back (the Agent of choice thing) and we get another bill, which we pay. How much is this bill?

Then, finally the NVC sends the instruction packet out to the "agent" (who is?), and we can make an interview appointment with the consulate and gather all of the required documentation (which we've already started getting).

So we gotta pay the I-864 processing fee, the immigrant visa fee bill, the medical exam fee, and then a bunch of money to the consulate when we pick up our visa?

All this back and forth and back and forth stuff doesn't seem very efficient

There is two paths to the NVC process which can be clearly seen in the NVC Flowchart.

Have you read the pinned Timesavers & James Shortcuts thread in the NVC forum? It will show you ways of speeding up the NVC process which many members doing CR-1 opt for.

Yes it all seems like a lot of back & forth with bills & paperwork but there is method in the madness. You will find it a more pleasant experience as you are at least somewhat involved at this level, not just waiting like when at the service center.

At NVC the beneficiary becomes the applicant for the visa.

The agent is whom ever is chosen to be as per the DS-3032. Most make the USC spouse the agent because of international mailing times. Everything from NVC will then be sent to the agent.

I looked at that flow chart. Don't we have to both of those? I read the shortcuts too, but I'm still confused. If I send the AOS ill with payment and the I-864 tehn my husband won't have to deal with the DS-3032 or DS 230? If you are saying that you can choose one or the other path in the flow chart?

No sorry you misunderstand but thats ok as this process can seem to be very confusing. There are two paths. One for the beneficiary/applicant which is for the DS-230......and one for the USC spouse for the I-864. By making the USC the agent the IV Bill and the DS-230 will be forwarded to the USC. Both paths however remain distinct. Easy terms......The choice of agent can be done by emailing the NVC. Many choose to do this now with no problems even though it is not an option openly given by NVC. Once the AOS Bill has been paid the I-864 package will be generated and forwarded to the USC/agent. Once the IV Bill has been paid, the DS-230 will be generated and forwarded to the agent. The DS-230 however is for the beneficary who is now the applicant and must be signed by them. The easiest way to do this is to have your spouse forward a signed DS-230 part 1 to you. Part II is signed at the interview.

Hope this clears it up a little for you.

Things will be less confusing and clearer, as the process goes by. Since you already have a case number, you can now concentrate on the choice of agent. Many of us here took care of choice of agent thing by emailing NVC. The beneficiary (The foreign spouse alien) should email the NVC after the DS 3032 (Choice of agent) form is generated. Please read the shortcut on NVC forum again and it will be more clear for you.
