Only US Citizens can obtain a US passport. A greencard, even a 10-year greencard doesn't make you a citizen. You (or your wife, whoever the Immigrant is) will have to go through the Naturalisation process before you can apply for a US passport.

Congratulations on the greencard!!!

HI,

So when can we start this process?

So when can we start this process?

From VJ Naturalization FAQsmile.gif

8.1)...When can I apply for United States citizenship?

A...As a spouse of a US Citizen, you can apply for citizenship 3 (three) years after approval of your Adjustment of Status. Your approval may be noted via any of the following: approval notice (I-797), on your passport (I-551 stamp and date), your green card ("resident since" date). The 3 year countdown begins with that date. This 3 year period does not include long absences from the United States.

great, so this means which time stamp count down? Her first 2 year green card or the clock starts after her 10 year green card?

Thanks

The approval date from when her AOS was approved as shown on the conditional green card, or on the I-797 Welcome Letter.

ETA: There is no rush once the three years are up. Unlike ROC, there is no 90 day window in which you have to file.

Ok, so 1 more year then as she had the 2 year conditional Green card. Am I right?

Thanks !

Question, when can we get a US Passport? do we have to wait for a certain period to switch from a Thai to US Passport?

Thanks

Congratulations!

US Passports are issued for US Citizens only. If you are planning on applying for naturalization, then once you are approved and have taken the oath you can apply.
