I have my husband's birth certificate (as well as his mother's because she is a joint sponsor) and I'm not sure it's the right papers.

Those papers are very old and torn and show the basic birth information as well as a print of the feet. Are these American Birth Certificate? I'm just confused because my Canadian birth certificate looks more like... well, it's newer, for one. It doesn't have the feet print, just basic information.

Can I still use these older papers as birth certificate?

This is the closest example that I could find with a google search. The birth certificates I have here are similar to that one, but they also have feet print. http://www.babble.com/CS/blogs/strollerderby/2009/05/Birth_Certificate1.gif

The birth certificate has to have both his parents names. I am not sure if that one is ok it should be if it has his parents name on it. Yours has to have your parents name on it too. I had to order a new one because i just had the short form with my name on it.

I know the one you're talking about. I had the wallet size one when I crossed the border. I had to order the bigger one for AoS. His and his mom's BC have the parents info, so hopefully, it'll do.

Thank you!

My husband's original is pretty old and tatty looking as well. It's also quite fuzzy, like the ink has blurred! But they didn't look at it, because I submitted certified copies of our BCs with the application. He just photocopied those and gave them back, no word about our originals.

They are so fickle, these IOs!

Well, I'm just hoping they won't send an RFE for a newer BC, who knows how long THAT'd take.

I had went ahead and gotten my "Long Form" certificate because aside from this, I only had a small wallet-sized card. If you don't have it, I think it may be beneficial to you to order one.

I do not know what province you are from, but I am from Ontario and found the following links. Though I am sure each province works differently, I cannot imagine fees/forms being too varied between provinces.

Long Form (Certified) birth certificate information: http://www.ontario.ca/en/residents/119279

Prices (Ontario): http://www.ontario.ca/en/residents/119281

If not mistaken, my mother was able to submit an application form for the birth certificate, and it was delivered to her (in the province) rather quickly. To that extent, your own parents ought to be able to apply for a copy as well.

Those certificates with footprints are not official birth certificates and prove nothing.

In the US most counties can provide official certificates quickly. If they live near the county they were born it it will probably take a day or 2 otherwise most counties can reply via mail within a couple of weeks.

I'll have both. And since I didn't have much paperwork with me to begin with, I had to go trough a notary and have her order it for me. Cost double, but at least I have one less thign to worry about.

Thank you for the info! I guess we'll have to go get those. :)
