nevermind that if not for the military, you'd be goosestepping and speaking german right now.

Unfortunately I don't buy having millions of your people living on the streets, in trailers and in third world-esque towns and cities, while $1.3 trillion goes to the military.

Who is going to attack? China? Why would they attack the same fool that owes them $800 billion?

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

probably so, for australia.

Sorry Charles this ain't 1940. Middle America has not got the memo yet but the rest of the first world now focuses on improving their quality of life rather than buying weapons or starting wars. It's only small town folks who still think they're the envy of the world. The same type of folks who actually think buying new guns is awesome.

So lets cut from the Military's $1.3 trillion annual budget and then we we'll have plenty of money. What many black-check military advocates fail to grasp is that the military adds zero value to a country. Whereas investing $100 billion to lay high speed rail, will ot only create jobs but offer something that can be unitized for years to come.

The country needs to get it's priorities straight.

PS Greece has mandatory national conscription.

weapons research and development is an industry that provides jobs and also foreign weapons sales is a benefit so you can't say ZERO.

Who said get rid of it? I'd cut it in half - with the majority left going to R&D.

Country in position #2 China spend $85 billion. More than enough. The rest of the money is invested in their country.

I the military adds a ton of jobs to the economy not to mention the benefits service members get in exchange for their service.

In fact not only are people and industries dependent on military dollars... whole cites are.

Thats not an excuse to spend... just facts about what that spending effects.

Actually military spending offers the lowest ROI. That is reality. Had the same $1 trillion been actually invested in the US annually, while the $300 billion left on Military, the Midwest and South wouldn't look like a current hillbilly / ghetto version of a third world country. That's not me being offensive or hating, that is reality.

It always amazed me to travel to the South or MidWest America and hear people talk about the Military like it's the same thing as a 9-5 career.

PS How/Why do you guys think the Soviet Union collapsed? The majority of their money was pumped into military.

i'd cut it in half too by bring troops back from germany, UK, spain, korea, and japan as a start so countries like AUS would need to step up more. this is part of the problem, we have to maintain the US and the world as well unlike countries like AUS. it is probably better to invest in the navy... send troops to hotspots instead of sitting idle all over the place.

i'm american but i'd so love to be from a place like norway, AUS and others that can't and don't play so well in international affairs. it surely leaves these countries with a lot of freedom to use the technology the US has developed to advance their economies.

You don't have to maintain anything as this is neither the 40's or the 60's.

Those other countries you mention are using technology developed by the private civilian industry, like apple, Caterpillar, GE or Cisco. Also keep in mind, a hell of a lot of technology and research comes from them. Not to mention, do you think the typical knuckle-head military types are the ones inventing the technology? Over half the engineers I have met here are foreign born.

Last but not least, it's absolutely ridiculous to think that you are borrowing billions from the same country you are defending against - China.

nothing wrong with that, this/that/whatever is called culture. the US is huge so are you saying every city and town and village should be the same? people move INTO these places because they like how the south and midwest live (i'm speaking of hillbilly). ghetto is not unique to the south or midwest, ghetto is alive in NYC.

apple, caterpillar, GE, Cisco are all american companies. i wasn't talking about technology the US gov't develops.

and those foreign born engineers - no biggie there. if we don't have it, we buiy it and this is why the USA will always be number 1. the US is just like a company that wants to expand into something fast, they buy another company. we still have the world's best universities and they attract a lot of foreign talent that MORE OFTEN THAN NOT stay in the US and eventually become Americans working to the BIG MACHINE.

Nothing wrong with being dirt poor and living in trailers? Or living in towns that look like rusted our ghost ships.

You missed the point regarding companies. These are no-military companies. It's them who is bring in the bucks you mentioned earlier. Fact still remains that for every dollar spent, the military has the lowest ROI.

You also missed the point regarding engineers and the military.

nope, nothing at all. the world is not perfect, the USA is not perfect, there are too many kinds of people in america for america to be the same everywhere.

many have moved out of the south for they wanted something different which is the way to go if you aren't satsified. for some, the south and midwest are an escape to a simply life and there isn't a thing wrong with that. opportunities are abound for the poor if they so choose to chase them so i see "poor" as their choice.
