I am living in Egypt (and will be staying here for one more year) my Egyptian SO and I have been together since around October. In November he applied for a tourist visa to the US with the intention of coming to visit with me while I would be home with my family during the summer..

however, since the point when he got his tourist visa, we have discussed the prospect of getting married and immigrating to the US after I leave Egypt. To do this, neither of us would be able to afford a vacation in the US since all of our funds would be going towards the visa process.

The questions then are:

1-would the fact that he applied for a tourist visa recently, hurt his chances of being approved for K1 visa? We are also considering the option of marriage and then Direct Consular Filing..since that seems to be a less expensive process..and perhaps less time-consuming?

But we both wonder if the fact the he went through all the trouble of getting a tourist visa that he might not even use..look suspicious? I mean...it just kind of happened this way...and logically it doesn't make sense to spend money on a vacation to the US when we could be saving it for more important things..like marriage and actual immigration....

2-Any advice on which process would go more smoothly? And how long either process would take..I've been reading through some posts here..but it seems hard to judge..is there hope of us actually being able to move to the US together by summer 2010?

Not at all, in fact, since he was just approved for a visitors visa, he passed a lot of checks all ready. So the K-1 should be a slam dunk.

If your eligible for it, go for it.

Life happens - things change - Umit had a visitors visa, and we went the K-1 route.

DCF by summer? K-1 by summer? Not likely - either way would be about 6-8 months out. Follow the guides above and pick which route you want to go with.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.
