The biggest misconception about my country: USA is number 1.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

His family, while talking on Skype is under the impression that they all live like the Beverly Hillbillies down home, critter stew and all that. Yes the culture is different but not so much that Jed Clampet is the norm.

You should send him home with those Roadkill Cafe t-shirts and have him tell them that is where he ate...LOL. They would probably die.

It's also nice to see you are duping him into visiting before it gets really hot ;)

OH MY GOOOOOODNESS....

Bryan hasn't a chance! He thinks 70 is a heat wave too! LMAO. I can think of many Christmas's that I spent in shorts and t-shirts running around bare foot. When I went over to the UK last Oct....now that was cold. Bryan spent the better part of the winter here and now....he gets to enjoy the heat of summer first hand. He is very pale and he has a bit of red head in him so am gonna make danged sure he is protected. I am just so excited about showing him home that I don't know what to show him first! And its suppose to rain Sunday! You ever been walking in the rain in the south? It's incredible and that is certainly on our agenda. Much nicer then the rain up north....don't matter if its summer or not the rain is bitter cold and miserable.

You can stand me at the gates of hell, but I wont back down.

I have! Summer showers are the best all the way around.

I was on the northern tip of Scotland in July last year and thought THAT was cold. I think it was like 55-ish that weekend. His stepmom kept saying "Turn the heat up for that girl before she freezes to death" lol, whereas near Edinburugh I was in shorts and a tank top practically dancing in the street (it was 107 and about 66-70% humidity when I left for my trip)...LOL. That answers that. Summer home in Scotland, winter home in Arkansas! LOL.

Southern things to show him:

Magnolia trees of course

Spanish moss

Wisteria

Chicken Fried Steak

Real mexican food opposed to the ####### they call mexican food over there....well, real "american" mexican food....lol, but seriously...jar guacamole? *barf*

Someplace where there are no city lights and you can actually see the bazillion stars in the night sky.

Sunset fishing (best time of the day for it)

That's all I can think of off of the top of my head!

You know....stars....yeah that is a have too too. Am taking him to Stone Mountain. That should take care of that. As far as the mag trees...yeah I know a place to take him. Grampa has some property .....a couple hundred acres...loaded with pecan trees as well! Then too, Callaway Gardens, The Little White House, Sequoyah Caverns, LookOut Mountain, just to name a few I can/t wait to share with him. But I think walking the tracks will be my favorite. I use to do that as kid and haven't been able to do so in years. Then too he has never done so as I suppose its against the law in England. Really am looking forward to showing him .....Home.

P.S.......Ain't nothing better then fishing at night on the Chattahoochee River! Need to pick up a couple cane poles and go at it.

Sounds like you have a good plan going!

AZ summer is freaking cake compared to here...in my opinion. Imagine it being as hot, and so humid you can't breathe! Walking across the street to check the mail breaks out your whole body in a sweat. Arizonia in July I was on a mountain, shivering, while laying out and getting a tan! It is warmer off the mountains, but MAN OH MAN I would looooove for it to not be humid here.

Kinda of off topic but in the year I have lived in the USA, not one person has noticed/guessed I'm from Scotland. Yes I have red hair and a funny accent and really, I'm not that bothered but it leaves me wondering when ALL the time I get -

'What brought you here from Ireland' or

'Ah, so you're Irish' or

'Have you been back home to Ireland yet' or

'What part of Ireland are you from' !!

So I then say, no, I'm actually from Scotland. Bingo. That's when I get the long winded heritage stories about what clan they belong to and what percentage they are Scottish etc. I'd have thought out of everyone, these folk would be able to guess but no, not once. The first person I meet who can guess I'm Scottish is getting a drink bought for them!!

That's not off topic at all! Everyone assumes Red hair comes from the Irish people. Unfortunately the majority of the accents Americans hear are on TV and most people can't identify one from the other. I can only identify the Northern Scotland Accent...I can't understand a frapping word most of the rest of them are saying ><.

Well, now that the Doctor has a red haired Scottish companion, maybe *some* Americans will start to guess right?

Also, we don't have the same ear for accents as you do. We Americans can usually tell the difference between east coast, southern, Minnesontan, and midwestern (this is the "no accent" version of American English), but English (not even counting the various versions of this!), Irish, Scottish AND Australian all sound the same to us. I was just hearing about how they did a study on this, because men with accents aparently sell stuff better, and at first they thought it had to be English, but it turns out that since we Americans can't (in general) distinguish English/Australian, the Aussie did just as well selling us stuff. it's only because I personally interact with some individuals that I can tell the difference. For example, I can pick out Australian and English, having friends from one and married to the other, but I can't (yet) differentiate between Scottish and Irish. It's probably because the only examples I have (radio commercials - in the US) are all mixed up anyway!

Slightly funny story - the first time my friend from New Zealand called me, I listened to the voice message and wondered if it was in another language. After about 4 times listening to it, I figured out that it was in fact, some form of English. :)

I find that very interesting. I haven't ever really had a problem with distinguishing, but I would say *most* Americans do. Of course they also mentioned on Glee last week that musicians can pick up sublities in "different" languages better from having a trained ear. ( I should find an article to verify this.) Did you ever play an instrument?

I can usually tell the difference between a Southern and Northen Brit, I can only tell the difference because Scots because I can understand the Northern Scots A LOT easier than the Southern Scots (They're almost impossible for me to understand unless they talk REALLY SLOW XD) Aussies and New Zealanders do sound the same to me, but I can still hear regional differences when I hear them talk.
