I think there is a difference between mass hiring of children to do the jobs of adults because kids work cheap, and kids working because it helps support the family or working on the family farm.

My husband worked from the age of about 5. He carried kerosine on his head through the streets of his town, selling it to people who needed it. There are, in fact, child labor laws in his country, but the enforcement of them is variable. I really don't think that he should have been banned from doing this.

Working from that age did not destroy him. It built his character and it bought him pencils and paper for school and probably kerosine to light the lamps to study by.

As for children working on the family farm, I'm not sure how that is different from doing chores. I did not grow up on a farm, but we were seen regularly on weekends working in our yard. I'm not saying we didn't b#tch and moan about it, but we were the kids all the other kids in our very afluent neighborhood were held up to. "Why can't you be more like the ##### kids?"

I was babysitting my younger siblings from a fairly early age, and I babysat A LOT for neighbor kids from the age of 11 or 12. I managed to save up a couple of thousand dollars at $1/hour, and that is after paying to go to movies or buy new shoes, etc. I was highly sought after because I was good at what I did. The experience taught me to take pride in my efforts and do my best.

How do you believe that makes any kind of sense Danno? The history of child labour laws gives you the context you seem to need as to why these laws are a good idea. It's not about preventing a kid earning pocket money, or helping out on the family farm during free time.
