I was raised Catholic, lapsed into an agnostic (actually it was WAY more involved than that but it's too much to go into here), but am trying to find my way back to faith since the birth of my child. I felt safe, happy, and much more centered when I had faith. I was also a much nicer person and was able to handle a crisis better. I want my child to have that sort of basis to work from.

My husband was raised Catholic as well. But he was also raised in a Vodun family. He considers himself to be Catholic, but he is also a very highly initiated Vodusi. He's almost as high as you can get in the practice. I can't explain what that means because I don't fully understand (don't want to and probably wouldn't be allowed to), but he's not a witch doctor or a fortune teller, or anything like that.

He does not see these things as being exclusive of one another. I try to keep an open mind, but I find it hard at times not to be dismissive of his beliefs. He knows I do not believe, and we leave it at that.

I want to make it clear that I'm not talking about Santeria or anything resembling that. The Vodun of his country is not like the Voodoo of Haiti or Louisiana, though the latter grew directly out of the former.

Don't be ridiculous. I am not talking about values, but about practices. I have already said it is very important to teach a child a moral value system. As A.J has said, some practices can indeed impact a child negatively - not allowing a child to participate in soccer because of wearing shorts is intrusive. It stops a child from doing something that really, there is no reason they should not be doing.

There are experiences that have nothing to do with religion that I will have no qualms about restricting my daughter from.

For example, let's look at beauty contests. I'll admit that I harshly judge parents who enter children too young for the idea to have originated with them, but I don't judge parents who allow their 'tweeners to participate in these things. However, at this point in my parenting mindset, I can't see me ever letting my child participate, no matter how much she may want to.

On the other hand, I'm sure a lot of people here would consider hunting an off-limits experience, while if my daughter wants to try it when she is old enough, I'll allow her.

If I can judge that this sort of thing is okay for my daughter and that sort of thing isn't when it has nothing to do with my religion, I don't see the difference in making those sorts of determinations based on a particular religious viewpoint.

woooooooooooow vodun!!! A new way of saying voodoo.

well my husband and I are different faiths. If youre a christian and you google interfaith marriage you;ll see alot of quotes about, how can two live together if they do not agree, and/or darkness and light, etc. These scriptures were not exclusive to marriage, nor were they supposed to be applied as such. Before i got married, i had a list of priorities that i wanted in a mate and though i have christian beliefs that was not the most important one of them in my partner. my faith is important to me, i however needed someone who was honest, and my best friend more than I needed him to believe exactly like me.

I think the basis of a good marriage is agreement. the first year is the most difficult and rewarding of any marriage, we have been working out what we want within the relationship... working on agreement, and disagreeing amicably. We have argued about the tenets of our faith s; he fights fair, i dont. lol its a learning process, i have learnt alot about myself since getting hitched, now I know I'm an arrogant, moody, bitchy mess, that my husband loves dearly. those characteristics lend themselves to some heated arguments, but i made up my mind to not try to change him (before i got married), to love his differences and just live. Life is too short.

So do you plan to take your kids to experience all the choices that are out there? Like a visit to a church, to a mosque, a Jewish or Hindu temple, Satanic ritual, etc so they are not excluded from any possible choices in their life? Or no?

I wouldn't take a child to a sect of any description, particularly one I don't know anything about - there are some very unscrupulous people out there who claim to be religious but who are simply extortionists. That's not a good environment for a child.

No, frankly I don't intend to embark on a series of religious immersion experiences for my child. He'll have to make those decisions on his own when he is older, but if you think I simply tell him that there is no god and to shut up about it, then you are mistaken.

MC you sound a bit like an extremist, if you really think exposing your child to places of worship would be harmful OMG, even dangerous!

From the testimonies we have right here in this topic.... it is too often "ineffectual"

I think the truth is closer to..... you want your child to be well rounded ... except in the areas of faith.

Or perhaps you only want limited opinions on the topic spoon fed to the lad?

What if your son (when he is old enough) wanted to go with a friend to his church one sunday? Or wanted to join a Kids sports program run by a local Church.... what would you say?

... Remembering of course how you felt about the story (AJ mentioned) about the kid not being allowed to play soccer due to the shorts being worn as a uniform... would you deny your kid something he wanted to do.. like join his friends on the church sports team?

Danno, why don't you answer her question and tell her about your faith and your wife's?

Gee thanks for the invite Steve. B-)

My personal marital experience was not offered because the wife and I are a match so we never had this problem to over come.

I am under the broad CHristian label and the Wife is as well.

In my previous Marriage, I saw how it could be extremely hard. I was brought up Christian and those are my beliefs. My ex-wife was brought up Catholic, but many of her family had converted to an Opportunity-inspired brand of Bhuddism called SGI.

We fought bigtime over this religion/cult, because of how secretive the members were/combined with the Hard Sell they pushed on her and I.

"Cult" or Bhuddism?

Cult Help - SGI

My initial insticts were to never marry this woman, but based on our past 6 yrs. together, I trusted her.

One year into our Marriage, she became ill with Systemic Lupus, and she became very active in SGI as a way of chanting away her disease. She told me before the Marriage that she had been curious about SGI, but it did not really interest her. When she came out of the hospital, she was going to "Private Meetings" and I was upset from her Illness plus these secretive phone calls.

Long story short, our constant arguing over 4 years reduced our Marriage to what felt like a complete mistake for both of us. I viewed her as being deceptive, and she viewed me as "Untrusting of her decisions."

My concerns centered around her ability to make clear decisions while under the amount of medications that she was under, along with the secret nature of this religious group, and their constant hard sell trying to get me to convert.

In an effort to save our Marriage, I paid $23 cash and converted - for two weeks. I saw that the religion was empty and the rules made absolutely no sense. I kept all of the literature and prayer books to share with people since cults typically don't like for their information to make it into the light of day. That's my story...

But, if your Fiancee is having difficulties, a Marriage Counselor is a very good idea - especially before you are both married. I think this is a critical time for both of you to work together on your differences in order that they do not tear you both apart.
