I think most couples have at least a few different ideas on the topic of faith, but if the two people are from different faiths all together.... and faith is important, that can lead to a clash, especially if they have kids.

It's been my experience very few people have a "interfaith marriage"........ it's usually more like an "interfaithless marriage".

i am some christian sect, my wife is buddhist. we have been to the christian churches in her country many times, also many buddhist temples. i'm open about it all, she not interested in christianity. we get along, it's not topic for argument, but we do talk about it sometimes.

I suggest to you that you have yer USC spouse watch a movie, 'The Civilization of Maxwell Bright' and then ask his comments about it.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

My wife is Buddhist, and I am agnostic (leaning toward atheism). So far, it hasn't caused any problems whatever. She has her Buddhist altar, and says her prayers twice a day. On days when she has her "time of the month" I light the incense and put it on the altar for her. On certain days of the lunar month she eats vegetarian.

We've gone to visit many Buddhist temples and pagodas. I find them beautiful from an artistic perspective, and I respect her choice to believe. The biggest difference is that she views those statues as something to be revered. To me, they are beautiful pieces of art, but they're just rocks. We had our engagement ceremony in a Buddhist temple in Vietnam. I went through all of the motions, bowed, kneeled, etc. I didn't say any of the chants, mainly because I don't know them. My wife knows I did this out of respect, and not because I believed there was any spiritual significance to what I was doing.

I'm perfectly happy to accommodate my wife's beliefs, even though I don't believe as she does. She has no problem with this. I think part of the reason this works well for us is because her religion is somewhat tolerant and doesn't require others to believe as they do. Another part of the reason is because I don't have beliefs that conflict with her beliefs. I simply don't have any beliefs. Also, my morals are based on humanism, and they are consistent with her morals based on Buddhism.

I think where this caused problems is when both husband and wife have strong religious beliefs, and those beliefs differ. I wish I could tell you there's an easy solution for this. I don't suppose either one of you are willing to covert? :innocent:

I'm Hindu by birth, but not a strict, practicing one. I don't pray regularly, I eat beef, and festivals are a fun time but I don't attach any higher meaning to it.

My husband is Irish Roman Catholic technically, but again, he's pretty agnostic.

We have no issues regarding religion as we are not really religious. We discuss it sometimes. I like to go to churches, mosques, temples. I like the history, the architecture and I like the tranquility associated with it. But that's about it.

My fiancee and I are both Christians. She's of the charismatic flavor and I used to be. So far it makes for interesting conversations, but I'm quite honestly happy we both believe in the same God, can pray together, go to church together and will be able to raise our kids without much conflict. Someone told me a long time ago (like when I was 14 or 15) that sharing the same religion as your SO was very important. I've never forgotten that advice.

What sort of fights? Different religions altogether? one religious one not?

My ex had a "religious awakening" whilst we were together. I didn't like it and didn't appreciate it at all. I have very strong non-religious views and so the sudden change bothered me BUT I spoke with him about it and told him i didn't mind what he did or what he believed as long as he didn't try and force it onto me.

Have you had a talk with your fiance about what you want going forward? I see issues if you don't discuss whether your children will or won't be religious (just for starters). Religion, like politics, is often a hot topic and needs to be sorted out. For instance, had I married my ex (thank goodness i didn't) I would NOT have allowed them to grow up knowing religion. I would have told them about it to have them understand and tolerate those who believe, but I wouldn't press it. My ex would have wanted them raised in the church... we never would have seen eye to eye and the MANY arguments that would have ensued would have been the death of our relationship.

Sometimes, we need to change for the one we love. Maybe a little, maybe a lot. If you can't compromise on your religious or other beliefs (I mean "you" generally, not you specifically) then it's not a good sign for a strong relationship. I know that some people convert for the ones they love. I know that I wouldn't have.

We had to wait 30 days before we could get married in India as we are from different communities and had to get married under the Special Marriage Act. I also know many foreigners who convert to Hinduism so that can have a quickie Hindu wedding without any waiting time. For some reason that really bugs me. I don't know why. It tells me that they don't know much about the religion in the first place and for them, it's merely a matter of convenience. You simply cannot "convert" to Hinduism. You are either born one or not. Hinduism is more of a culture than religion, and while "legally" the conversion is allowed, spiritually, it doesn't mean anything. Hinduism, as a body of religion, doesn't believe in conversion unlike other major global religions such as Buddhism, Christianity or Islam.

I would not convert for my husband. Neither would I let him for me. Even though we are not really religious. It's still the people we are, and I wouldn't change that.

No offense intended, this is just how I feel.

Pras and I are both Hindu-converts to Christianity. She became Christian in 1983 (in Guntur) and I became Christian in 1994 (in Atlanta, GA)--so we were both born-again Christians before initial contact.

She does not like music of "secular" varieties (gospel-songs and hymns only), whereas I have obvious liking for Country (such as Lisa Brokop, Ian Tyson, Mark Chestnutt, Martina McBride, ...).

Joseph is catholic and I will not enter a church ( long story about abuse as a very young child) . However my mother was a Sunday school teacher for 67 years ( from her teens until she broke her hip in her 80's) He gets up every morning and does his prayers , singing about as off tune as anyone I have ever heard. There is a church that he attends every Sunday less than 2 miles from the house. A bonus is that one priest in training is from his tribe. He understands that I have some quirks caused by my past so he doesn't even talk to me on this unless I bring up religion. In fact right now he is chanting about covering everything in blood of Christ. I think coming from Nigeria you learn how to be tolerant of other religions. ( well unless you are out killing people over it)

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.
