We used to have that in West Virginia but they took it away it.

Our legislature is famous for stuff like that. Presently we pay sales tax for everything, statewide at the rate of 6%, including food. For a year or two the food tax was repealed, but eventually they decided they were missing out on too much revenue.

I think it's a good idea, but even when we had it, it didn't make me go out and shop. Essentially for every $100 spent you only saved 6 bucks. Nowadays that won't even buy 2 gallons of gasoline.

Speaking of which, I'd be ready to sign up and join any revolt anybody wants to stage on gas prices. THAT'S the area the American consumer needs to stand up and do something about. The relentless profiteering is beginning to remind me more and more of the type of thing that lead up to the French Revolution. Why is our government doing nothing about it?

DC and Virginia are both having tax free shopping for school related items and clothing with DC continuing through next week. Some shops in Virginia malls are even voluntarily paying the taxes for you on items that are not covered under the limitations (ends tommorow). Maryland will have it's tax-free shopping towards the end of August on the same type of school related items, that's when I'm going. In addition, last time I checked, Delaware had no sales tax. However, prices in Delaware are still comparable to Maryland for most consumer goods.

Our sales tax on food is around 3%, supposed to be eventually phased out (yeah, right) and we pay no tax on prescriptions. It's pretty bad though when a gallon of milk costs more than gas!

Joel and I are ready to join! Darn gas prices are draining us dry! The government must be getting some kind of kickback from the profits is all I can figure. Here in GA last school term our esteemed governor declared a gas shortage and wanted all the public schools closed for TWO days....talk about angry parents! It was ridiculous...a lot of teachers bragged about going shopping - in Atlanta (we're at least an hour and a half from ATL here where we all live and work) so that did no good. Supposedly it was to save gas because it takes so much for the buses to run...all it did was add more time to the school schedule, much to the parents dismay.

Yeah, we're all for doing something about the gas prices...but what? *sigh*

Although we're 5% here in Maine, New Hampshire is a sales tax-free state and since my hubby works in Portsmouth, we do take advantage of that fact.

Live free or die, baby!

I live in Oregon... tax free state.. whooo hoo.... love it..

but flip side is.. when on vacations.. .. aughh what.. price is $1.99 + what? tax .. sheittttt... guess the cashier doesnt get the dang penny after all.. my daughter freaks cause she is used to what you see is what you pay.. .. ..

Best part tho.. beign a Oregon resident... we can go to Washington.. show our ID and get exempt from their taxes..

sometimes it work in our favor for big sales.. the malls in Vancouver Washington.. (just across the brigdge) will have a whopping sale.. .. lower prices than what is here... top that with no tax.. yeah.... .. when the stores know that people can cross the river and shop here in oregon and not ever be questioned... they will have whopper sales to stimulate the residents to stay there and shop.. .. thus making it worth the 20 minute drive for us to cross the river and make use of our tax freeness..

But then .. we do pay a bit more in gasoline tax tho... got to pay for the .. no self sevice of gasoline... it is against the law to pour your own gas here.. at teh gas station.. its like 5 cent more a gallon to keep it self serve free.. sure beats having to fill er up in the rain

MY BAD... sorry typed that while finishing off some champangne... ..

It is indeed.. pumping... it is a "Self-service" law Both New Jersey and Oregon have

The purpose of these laws was to protect consumers and gas station owners from costly, and possibly deadly, accidents. Better education and improved technology, however, have made pumping gas much safer and easier for consumers over the last 50 years. Since the 1970s, self-service gas stations have grown in popularity.

The New Jersey law was enacted in 1949 and the Oregon law in 1951. Each statute has stood up to several challenges in those two states.

Disabled motorists are most interested in seeing such laws survive. For those motorists with a disability, pumping gas is not an option and they depend on the employees of full-service stations.

Despite requirements outlined in the Americans with Disabilities Act, many self-service stations do not provide a full-service option for disabled drivers, nor provide those services at self-service rates.

It is actually against the law to pump your own gas. Oregon has a law, enacted in 1951, whose purpose was to protect consumers and gas station owners from potential deadly accidents. Fuel pumping technology has come a long way since then, however, with self-service gas stations becoming popular in most parts of the U.S. But Oregon remains as one of only two states (New Jersey is the other) that require a trained professional to pump your gas. In fact, it's a $10,000 fine if you pump your own gas!
