Actually, what I find more annoying is the "Oh, I remember those days!" and "Get your sleep now!" and "Your life will never be the same" stuff. I do get the concept that babies and little kids (OK, and even adult kids) interfere with sleep and that a lot changes when you've got a small human you're responsible for. My close friends who have kids have been great though, and mostly offering practical advice, like what stuff we might consider buying, and all the baby stuff people buy but often don't need or use. It seems that it's the friends of friends types who want to ramble on about little Johnny (wait...nowadays, that would be little Chase or Brady) or Ashleigh/Brittanee, who did this, this, and this, blah blah blah... Sheddep lady!

I definitely agree with that. I'm not expecting (although we hope to be in the next couple of years) but it really bugs me when people find that someone is pregnant and then immediately bursts in with the "get all the sleep you can now" and "Good luck, you're gonna need it" stuff. Especially when it's new parents saying this, and they were the ones hating that advice a few months/years before.

And don't get me started on the "ohhhhhh. All I'm saying is, take all the drugs you can get" advice. Studies have shown that a lot of labour pain comes from fear/tension in the body - because of what other people have told us. So basically, when you've gone through that, do not perpetuate the cycle and tell other expecting mummies how much it will hurt. Labour hurts, everyone knows that. Don't frighten the poor cow. :star:

my grandmother actually was embarrassed to show her friends baby pictures of my cousin (who was her first grandchild) to her friends because "he was an ugly baby"

ah but grandchildren are not the same as children - Mike Tyson's mum thought he was gorgeous

so did Larry King's

Ben Stein

How long until you're a statutory Englishman, Alan?

I am a revelation to the right wing inhabitants of the Washington desert who think it's a sign of the second coming.

(Second comings are not that often nowadays in my house)

I have a multi coloured cloth that I use to rest my pistol on (stop it !) - and sometimes, up at the range, I wrap it round my head just to shake em (Sheik em) up a bit.

They don't believe I was in a fish and chip shop in Yorkshire last week - they reckon it was a Madrassa for my graduation ceremony - I can tell in their eyes.

I will always be Alan the Alien - even when I get my blue passport in January and my GC is pulled from my cold dead wallet

Less of the 'old' you young whippersnapper - have you know my loins are girded up with the genes of my fourbears who are indestructible to at least 95 except when the Germans shoot them...oops don't mention the war

you get arrested for squirting kids repeatedly.

Uh-oh. This was about 90% of my parenting plan. unsure.gif

Maven, I hear you. I had no intention of having children, either. Then there was an 'accident' when I was 39, I completely freaked out about it, then lost it, and was totally upset. Figured out I actually kinda wanted to see if I could turn out a better me - hey, it's probably impossible, I'm pretty damned awesome, but if anyone can, I can. Well, my husband can. I plan on hosting fondue tastings that rely heavily on gin.

Tracy - I saw the video of your baby shower on FB and I have to admit - it made me feel a bit verklempt. All the visa journey and there you are together a few years later with a bump, opening up baby presents.

Awww :star: You are so sweet!! It is sort of hard to believe, isn't it? Though around VJ, we're probably not so much of an anomaly in that sense - so I am extra touched by your sentiment. :)

And to think - we have Rush to thank for all of it, too!

Actually, a McDonald's hamburger (not a Big Mac or anything, just the basic burger) was one of the few things I could stomach during the first 14-ish weeks. Normally fast food gives me indigestion, and the very thought of consuming the meat of 1,000 cows would have me avoiding fast food burger places. But I guess when very few things are appetizing, you have to go for what you can handle! (The other stuff I could eat was cold cereal & milk, plain bagels and cream cheese or peanut butter, apples, and cheese pizza.) I don't think I ate a green vegetable for three months. Intelligent design my a$$.

I realize the irony of this post vis-a-vis my complaint about the "I remember those days!" stuff. I'm now doing it myself! "Way back when I was in the first trimester, boy did that suck!"

Well, four grandparents, forebears; it makes sense, unless they were nudists, in which case they'd have been forebares, si man.

This first trimester may need to be my die-mester, if she doesn't cut out the hormonal stuff. Shoot me now, please.

If I have any say over the baby shower (aren't they instead given BATHS, at least initially?), I will ensure that the invitation says, "If you believe that we are gifted individuals, you may bring a gift or not, but if you do, please have it be DIAPERS, si man."

Thought for the Day: If a half-a$$ed infant is born, would it wear a soloper?

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
